The guys did a good job and offered to let my kid put his handprint in the corner with a coin from the year of his birth. It was a nice touch.
Pun not intended but im going to give you credit for it anyway. ;)

Glad things are going well and you've made some decent progress.
If he likes the actual pool as much as he likes the shell I think we have found an excellent distraction from being home all day during a pandemic
My dog though the big hole in the ground was the best present ever. When we filled it with water it blew his mind even more. Your son will love it too !!

After a couple of weeks of rain, it took a week for the travertine decking to be installed. During that time, the electrical was completed. Pictures are attached.

I'm not really happy with how messy all the electrical conduit is. It will be hard to cover that area neatly because of how everything spills off the pad. It will be hard to work in the space because there is conduit all over the place, including some squished underneath plumbing. This crew left screws and mollies all over the ground around the site.

The travertine is fabulous. There were a couple of spots we will ask them to fix - a very large gap right at the step entrance and the one of the skimmer covers where the stone is all scratched from the tool they use to put the hole in the top. Otherwise, that crew did very well.

I hate the drainage line. The pool crew put that in and they know they will have to replace it. Ridiculous to me to have the tile crew cut around and finish that spot when they know it will be changed but nothing about the sub management on this project has made sense.

Non-pool contract related - our city water was connected today - yay!!

Fingers crossed we get plaster as soon as we have another break in the rain!

There was an attachment limit - here's a (sort of) funny one for you... we had a poor willow tree that has had a pile of dirt around it for 2 months. Today, they did the rough grade but left that tree entombed in clay. No idea how they plan to handle.

Looking at your post #50 here, I LOVE the shade variations of each step.....even without tile you can see each step easily, I WANT these steps!!!

<making note for future gunnite pool>

I wonder how hard it would be to use different colored plaster on steps to make ombre coloring like this?

Maddie

Over all the DID do a great job on the decking. That is one of my fav colors and patterns. Sigh on the gap right there AND that UGLY gutter pipe. Hopefully they will do as good a job when they work around the new one. Maybe they are thinking they can just use those with the new one??

That is not the worst looking/spacing for electric but it is not one of the neatest/best I have seen either.

Hi Maddie, that is actually the picture from NPT's site for what each step will look like at depth (we just added the trim to see how we'd like it). The extra water on top is supposed to give the ombre effect. We'll see in a few weeks if what we get is close.

Toss a night big pot overflowing with draping flowers (draping vinca are good in the sun) in front of that "ugly" drain and you;ll never see it again.

Let us know how much you like the city water, ok? :)

I like the idea of the pot. Appreciate the suggestion! Unfortunately, that is right in the walkway so we'd need to reconfigure things a bit. May be worth the time to do it.

Our well water was super acidic so we expect to like the city water better. Will definitely follow up.

Hi all,
We have a plastered pool!

Since the last update, the PB worked almost all of the punch list items. We are still disagreeing about the way they handled the edge of the travertine so there is some other work to resolve but at least the pool itself is moving along.

Travertine - the drainage channel that runs against the foundation of the house ends in dirt that is higher than the deck. This means the west corner of the deck is covered in mud. They are saying we are responsible for it because it is the ground on the other side of the patio. We said they should have sloped the ground away from that area as they did for the entire rest of the site. We'll see how it ends up. Right now, I can't really do anything else to the site until this is resolved so we have red clay everywhere outside the pool which is a bit frustrating.

Plaster - Prep started Friday 9/4. The pool was emptied, cleaned, and the tile placed on the steps & deep end. Saturday, 9/5, a whole crew came in and plastered. We did mini pebble and it was interesting to watch them walk around the pool throwing pebbles on the fresh plaster. It took them around 4 hours to finish the job. Sunday, 9/6, the pool was acid washed with Muriatic acid and Dawn, rinsed, then power washed with water. The tech placed all our water hoses for us and started the fill. We had 6 water hoses running and it took 21.5 hours to completely fill the pool.

Tile - we are *so* happy with the glass tile on the steps. Depending on time of day, the bottom step and the bottom of the pool just blend in together. With the line of tile, it is easy to see where to put your foot when stepping up or when to step down. We put a little 6" frog in the deep end near the return. It ended up exactly like we wanted it.

Brushing & Balancing - We were supposed to start brushing yesterday; however, a miscommunication by the PB meant none of our start up supplies were on hand. Someone is coming tomorrow to drop off everything and do the initial balance on the pool. I'm a little uncomfortable with that time frame w/no chemicals in the pool so I will likely go get some today and circulate them with a sump pump. We will be brushing 3x a week this week, 2x a week through the end of September then we will move to the regular 1x a week. We tested the water yesterday and it is off the chart alkaline (expected, due to new plaster) and off the chart low for chlorine (expected, due to sunny day and no treatment). We also figured out there is no hazardous waste disposal around us to dump the chemicals after we do a test so we have to decide how to handle a couple of the tests that have chemicals that shouldn't end back up in the water supply.

We bought the year subscription to the TFP app yesterday and look forward to entering our first log after balancing tomorrow.

I know we weren't supposed to use the pool until it was balanced but we did. It was a gorgeous day yesterday and it seemed wrong to wait to use it after we'd waited so long. Our son had a fabulous job doing cannonballs. I walked the pool check the elevation. This was a huge issue early in the build and I am ecstatic that we ended up getting exactly what we wanted in the design. The extra 4' we added in the final design session was something I appreciated over and over yesterday when I sat at the 'mom bench' and 8 out of 10 cannonball splashes fell just short of me :) We have a really large 4' deep area that is perfect to hang out in and the little turn with the deeper area (6.5') that my son loves jumping in and trying to touch the bottom. TFP research and help from members was critical to some of our decisions and we are thrilled - so thank you, everyone, who helped answer all our various questions and provide your thoughts and experiences.

Travertine - the drainage channel that runs against the foundation of the house ends in dirt that is higher than the deck.
Could you take some pictures from further away that show the surrounding area where the clay is washing onto the travertine? The exact fix would be determined by the amount of water coming towards the travertine and where it is coming from. It would appear you're going to need a small wall there but if you can't get the water to drain away then you might need a small drain above the wall to accept the water and put it into the same drain. if there is not a terrible amount of water it could be as simple as digging it out putting some filter fabric down and putting some stone on top of that.
Technically I don't really think it is there issue however anybody laying out a patio like that should certainly have picked up on the fact that some additional drainage work was going to be necessary there and brought it to your attention. I would hope you could get them to at least split the cost of whatever needs to be done.

Thanks, Rich, I will take some more pictures later today. The water is actually coming from the channel that runs along the foundation of the house. It has no where to go because the end of it is buried in ground that is higher than the deck by a couple of inches and there is no pipe or anything to carry off the water. So, the water washes against the dirt and carries it back down to the travertine.

We want the PB to lower it just where the channel is so we aren't responsible for any issues with that channel. We're afraid that if we lower it and there is an issue later with that drain that they will say our work caused it. This PB has been really difficult or it wouldn't be such a big deal for us.

The project lead did say that someone should have caught the issue and suggested that they put in a pipe to carry away the water. It just hasn't happened yet and we have a quagmire until it is resolved.

The plaster company came by today to check on the pool. They were concerned the PB had not started equipment or balanced the pool and said it can damage the plaster. The PB is saying it is fine to wait until tomorrow to start balancing and brushing (this was after they planned to have someone come today and ended up short handed). I pointed out that the PB's contract specifically says brushing is to start right away and offered again to get chemicals and a brush today. They insisted on waiting and said it will void the equipment warranty if we start up the pump to circulate the chemicals. So, we wait, and hope it will not damage the plaster ::sigh::

Ohh.. that is completely different from what I thought. I'm back to putting the responsibility squarely on them. How could you possibly install a drain that drains to nothing? Where did they think the water was going to go that their drain is collecting?

That part is not clear. Don't you just need to hook a pipe up to their drain and run it someplace to daylight?

That's why we have a disagreement. They said 90% of the jobs they do have a landscaper and they don't have to worry about it. They expect me to dig the end of the channel drain out and attach a pipe. My position is that they should have communicated that to me prior to burying the channel drain. They have run the end of it into ground that is slightly higher than the deck. The only way for me to hook into the drain now is to hand dig that area (so I don't hurt the drain or deck). Until then, the west corner of my deck is covered in mud.

We were told we would have a rough grade sloping away from the pool, all around the job site. We have that everywhere other than where the channel drain is. That 4' area didn't get graded. I want them to grade that area. If they do, the channel drain water would drain across the top of the ground and the water would fall away naturally.

After they are gone, if I need to install pipe, I will. Our goal was just to grass everything. Now we have to grade it before we can do anything.

We filled the pool Sunday and still haven't had start up. Apparently the Jandy panel didn't work as expected. They hooked the pump up directly to the electricity to get it circulating and added "three shocks", whatever that might be. No one told us there was an issue or that they had added chemicals to the pool. This morning I called to ask why we haven't had start up yet and they said it will be days before this issue with the panel is resolved. I asked that they bring the PH in the pool down (it is off the chart high right now) and they said the shock should have done it. We retested and sent them a picture of the results. They don't have enough crew to bring us chemicals so it is likely we will be going to the pool & hardware store today and trying to get everything ourselves so we can get the PH down then the chlorine up. Very frustrating.

PB ended up coming out this afternoon and putting a bunch of chemicals in the pool. Chlorine is better but PH isn't. My understanding was PH should have been adjusted prior to adjusting Chlorine so I'm not sure what their plan is. The pool water is murky and teal in color now. Like a blue gatorade :-(.

We'll see what it looks like tomorrow and go from there. Ya'll have a good night.
