I just received a detailed equipment list. What would you change? This is for a 35x21 geometric pool with 13x6.5ft sun deck. It will also have a raised 7x7 spa with spillover into the pool below. Depths 3.5-7 ft and approximately 27.5K gallons.
  • I've already asked to requote with the VS pump instead of VSF based on my reading here
  • I've read about making sure you get the Intelliflo unions. Are these the right ones?
  • Should I consider Raypak to replace the UltraTemp Heat Pump or the MasterTemp Natural Gas Spa Heater?

Chris,

The IntelliFlo VSF is a great pump.. The only problem I see here is new owners going though all kinds of effort to figure out what specific "flow" that they need. It just makes life hard on most of them.. This is not a pump issue, it is a people issue.. Either the VS or the VSF will be a great pump for you.. My suggestion is that if you get the VSF, initially set it up using just the VS settings and don't use the VF settings.. After you are up and running, if you find something that you think will work better in the flow mode, then just change it.. 95% of owners never need the VF option..

Most pool builders do not use pump unions for the IntelliFlo pumps unless you supply them, or tell the pool builder you want them.. I can't tell what you are getting looking at your list. They do not come with the pump..

I would rethink any "table" in the pool.. You really don't want anything in the way of your pool cleaner, no matter which one you get.. I don't see one in your equipment list, so assume you plan to buy a low voltage robot on your own..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks, @Jimrahbe !
  • Great call out on the VSF. I'll see what the cost difference is and make the decision based on the increase/difference
  • Here's a link to the same part number union Unions. Based on your comment above, it seems like this check the box in terms of the recommendation
  • Thanks for the feedback on the table. The table is supposed to be removable to allow it to be placed in when needed but removed for the robot to be able to clean without getting wrapped. Admittedly I'm not sure how easy/difficult it is to put it and remove. I'll check on this.
  • You got it on the robot. I'm planning to call Marina based on my reading here for the Dolphin or the Pentair made by Maytronics.

Is there a reason you're not going for a bundled IntelliCenter system (521908) instead of 522041, 521914 & 522475Z?

Thanks for the callout @guinness .

I actually saw the same thing and asked my equipment provider if there's a bundle available thinking it might save me some money. The crazy thing is that while I also found the same link you provided from Polytec, I can't seem to find a Pentair part number that has this bundle. Here's the Pentair link where I was looking: IntelliCenter® Control System. I can't find a part number that has the IC60 bundled, only the IC40? I'm wondering if they discontinued the bundle with the IC60?

Ha, I remember we hashed out in-pool tables pretty good here once. I was the main opponent. What are you going to do with a table in a pool? Try to sit around it? With drinks? Chips and salsa? A book? Do your on-line banking on a laptop?!? Eat dinner out there? Better plan on staying motionless, and yelling a lot at others not to move around. Got any kids? You can forget about putting anything on the table that can't get wet. They're going to love climbing up on it, though, and jumping off of it, that's about it!! Jim already pointed out the vacuum issue. I'm not a fan of robots because you have to put them in and take them out all the time (some here don't, but I think you're supposed to). But at least you can do that from the deck. So now you're going to have to climb into the pool to remove the table every time you vac, whether you leave the bot in all the time or not? Which could be every day depending on what falls into your pool. It might make a good place to grow algae, on its underside. So there's that.

Put your drinks on the coping, like the rest of us. Eat at the table under the patio cover. Work on your laptop inside! ;)

I believe it to be the kinda thing that sounds cool in the planning stage, but you'll end up only using it a few times ('cause ya paid a lot for it), then eventually abandon. Then you'll be left with a hole in your pool floor that will be perfect for collecting dirt, growing algae and stubbing your toe...

You definitely make some great points. Maybe I’ll have it setup with the mounting anchors as planned but hold off on buying the table for now. That‘ll make sure we still have the option but aren’t exposed to as much of the downsides.

Here's the part list from Pentair, as you say it only lists the IC40. I wonder if your provider can just switch out the cell? BTW the bundle includes 2 IntelliValve actuators for your spa.

At least you’ve verified I hadn’t missed something (although I wish I did!). I’ll do the math to figure out the bundle price difference and see if I can get my equipment provider to do the swap. It’s really strange as the easy touch bundle has a part number with the IC60 so I don’t understand why it doesn’t exist for the IntelliCenter.

Pentair tech support can sometimes offer things that local pool pros cannot, or don't know about (or don't want to admit to). Give 'em a call, they're generally very helpful...

Chris,

I think that is a PolyTec item.. I doubt your pool guy will be buying from them...

No matter how you do it, make sure that your load center has the internal SWCG power supply..

Thanks,

Jim R.

What is the motivation for both the heat pump and regular heater?

Not sure if overkill, but if you plan on using your spa a lot you might consider having a seat or two that have more than one jet.

Thanks, @Jimrahbe . I just thought it was strange that they would offer the easy touch package with the 60 but not the IntelliCenter.

@Sparks22, this is what was recommended by my pool consultant. I plan to talk to the parts person tomorrow. The way it was explained to me was the heat pump would extend pool season while the regular heater would power the spa. Also the heat pump isn’t as effective when it gets cooler. I’d love any perspective as this was one of the areas I wasn’t sure about.

So you pretty much are locked into the heater because of the spa. It comes down to a decision to add the heat pump or not. I had the same thoughts, and after using one of the online heat pump cost calculators and our current electricity/gas rates, I found it was going to be cheaper to just use the heater to heat the pool when we wanted to use it than to use the heat pump to keep the pool warm all the time (March through October). And that was before considering the extra cost of the heat pump equipment itself.

This could certainly change over time if the ratio of gas prices to electricity prices change, but I would do the math for your own situation to see how it lands.

What about solar? A pool cover would also help prevent heat loss.

Admittedly I haven’t done the math but great callout that I need to do it. I’ll search for a calculator to make sure I understand the cost. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think I need the heater no matter what for the spa but great point about maybe not needing the pump and instead going solar. The drawback I see here is no option to cool the pool in the hot Texas sun. I haven’t given much thought to a cover but thanks for the link as I’ll definitely check it out.

There are solar controllers that can use your panels to cool your pool. They just run at night. Solar panels are heat exchangers, they can work both ways... though I don't know if the Pentair products discussed above have that capability.
