I replaced all the tile at the waterline of my pool over the summer because every time we have a really hard freeze multiple pieces of the tile are cracked by the ice that forms. Could I drain the pool enough to get the water level below the tile (and subsequently below the two skimmers) and keep the pool circulating using only the main drain at the bottom of the pool? And if I did this, would I run the risk of the plastic tubing that runs from both skimmers to the pump room bursting? If so, is there something I could do to prevent that occurrence? I assume that would be a catastrophic event.

Have you tested that your main drain alone can adequately feed your pump?
I would blow out and plug your skimmer lines if you lower the water below the skimmer for the winter.
The frost line in TN is 3” so you don’t need to get water very low in your skimmer line.

I drop mine about 4" below the skimmers and after cracking the valves enough to get all the water out of the skimmer pipes install these..I also put a grocery bag over the skimmer cover to keep rain water out.

Want to be sure I understand: You drop water level 4" below skimmers. After you have done so, you slightly open the skimmer valves for a few minutes, THEN install the plugs? Predicted low tonight is 16

Depends how your skimmers and valves are setup.
Usually some type of blower, maybe foam rope down the skimmer line to push down the water, and a Gizzmo or cut up pool noodles in the skimmer. Read...

Thats all I do but 16 is rare in georgia but it has got down to the low teens and I have never had an issue..Knock on wood..I run the pump with the skimmers until it starts sucking air and close the valve back quickly
