About to start soon

So our engineer talked to board of health and no variance was needed. Yay! So now just waiting on permit to start construction of pool house(really just a shed with bathroom). Backfill is happening on Friday. Electrician is going to do final wiring next Wednesday. Patio is probably a couple weeks out as the backfilled area will need to settle, but at least we’re able to finally enjoy the pool a bit.

I have to say those are the BEST before and after pics I have seen!!!! LOVE IT! THAT is what it is all about!!!!

The kids have been in the pool from the moment they get home until bedtime. Once the lighting gets power, it’s going to be hard to get them out for bed. Makes it worth every penny invested to see them pass out at night from exhaustion.

Improper compaction (mostly no compaction) on backfill seems to be a huge issue in this industry especially with liner pools. Most PB's will say you can not compact against the walls of the pool because, it will put to much pressure on the walls so you need to give the ground time to settle on its own before putting on your deck. This is simply a excuse to not have to spend the time and money to do it correctly. To properly install any type of soil it needs to be compacted in lifts. The size of the lift will vary with the type of compactor and type of soil but generally should not exceed 12". You already have water in the pool so there is a tremendous amount of force already pushing out against the walls. If done properly compacting will put less pressure on the walls then simply pushing loose soil up against it. Look at it this way. If I properly compact against a 8' high wall I can then remove that wall and the dirt will hold itself up to reveal a perfect 8' shear face. If I dump loose dirt against a 8' wall then start to remove the wall the force of the dirt will push the wall over.

The reason they get away with this is because it will usually take years to settle (but I guarantee it will settle) and by then they are long gone and you are left to re-do the patio at your expense.

I would suggest having a conversation with the pool builder before they come to do the back fill. Simply state you are investing a lot of money in a deck and want it placed on the industry standard of 95% compacted soil which can not be achieved by letting it set for any period of time. If he pushes back then offer to get a engineer involved. It would then be the engineers responsibility to ensure the pool is not harmed and your patio has the proper base to be built on.

Pool is backfilled

Pool got backfilled today. Unfortunately, I didn’t read your post until now, Rich. They did do quite a bit of compacting around the pool, but right up against the wall is still a bit soft. Since it is all sand, I’m going to run the sprinkler to saturate and hopefully speed up the settling process. Not going to rush the patio. Probably wait a couple weeks.

Builder starts Monday on the pool house/shed.

I'm following this thread closely. We break ground next week on a 20x40 rectangular pool with the same liner as yours. Love the water color. Hope they finish yours soon!
We absolutely love our liner. The color is perfect in every light.

Good luck with your build. Hope it goes a bit faster than mine is.

He's starting no later than 7/30 and said he would be done in 4-6 weeks. He's hoping for 4, but weather can always slow you down. I'm holding out hope we are swimming Labor Day weekend. With the heater, we will have 2 months left to enjoy the pool before it cools off here.

Good to hear they actually had a compactor with them. Most PB backfills do not. Any type of water is good but the best thing you can do at this point is try to flood settle the area up against the pool where they probably could not get the compactor in very well. You can dig out the sand from the side of the pool and use it to create a 2' wide moat around the entire pool and then section the moat off in 20' sections. If you can get a 2-4" puddle of water in the sections it would be ideal. Flood these several times and hope for another good thunder storm to really fill them up. I would try to keep them in place up until they came to install the patio. Of course always make sure your the top of the moat wall is below the pool beam...

The good news is sand is one of the best materials they could have used to get good compaction and it is responds very well to flood settling.

I'll keep that in mind.

My yard is probably 95% sand so it was really easy digging for them. And quick work to backfill.

Following along, as we are looking at a single vs double Roman for our new build (hopefully coming this fall). I really love the liner over steps, but we have dogs, foster dogs and have a pet sitting business - so it's a hard no for us. Also love your liner! Very similar to our style as well.

Any updates? Following closely, as your build is very similar to mine. We start digging next Tuesday!
Nothing exciting happening for a bit. Need to let ground around pool settle a bit before pouring the patio. Foundation for pool house should be getting poured tomorrow.

Edit: well, nothing exciting aside from my 3 year old nephew filling his swim diaper until it leaked out the sides. Time to add a bit of chlorine. Can’t wait for the saltwater generator to get turned on.
