Thoughts on the Pentair IntelliFlo model 011018 being discontinued?

It was the base model 3HP VS from Pentair. This item was once considered to be the top of the line consumer pool pump from Pentair. Before the 011018 got its great rating, it was once the IntelliFlo 011013 which Pentair has since been discontinued. The 011018 model was a 3-horsepower pump that was capable of huge flow volumes, up to 180 GPM at 30' and 168 GPM at 40'. This pump was capable of over six horsepower and the flow rate and electrical draw were regulated via the diffuser and impeller. This was one of the reasons that many people believe the Pentair IntelliFlo is the best pump on the market for swimming pools. There's more info on its discontinuation here

Replacement is the 011028 model. Looks to be the same with a rotatable head.

Garrett,

It still is the "Gold Standard" of pool pumps...

Pentair IntelliFlo Variable Speed Pump 011028

I suspect it will drop in price as the older 011018 get sold out..

Thanks,

Seems like I heard from a Pentair rep that one of the reasons for the discontinuation is due to the difficulties involved in procuring the rare earth magnets utilized in the 011018 motors. Dang Chinese....?Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure of its veracity. Regardless, Pentair makes good equipment. I love my CC 420 filter!

Tim,

I don't believe that is true at all.. I believe that the motor is still the same basic permanent magnet motor.. The control head was replaced with the newer one that can be remote mounted or rotated. Pentair said they could no longer procure the old control head. Not sure if it was because of costs or because of the normal end of life on some of the internal parts.

I doubt there is anything nefarious going on.

I was curious about this so I called Pentair. I am almost 100% certain I was told this by a Pentair Customer Service Rep when I was researching pumps a couple of years ago. Regardless, I think it's a non-issue for the consumer anyway, just a manufacturing change, certainly not nefarious. I did not intend for it to come across that way.

When I called and asked about the magnet change, the Rep denied this was the case. I further asked about other changes between the models and was told one I haven't heard about, that being the drive and display can now be ordered separately, which could significantly reduce repair costs.
