Now that my pool is crystal clear and on liquid chlorine exclusively....

...I have another question.

My pool manufacturer recommends Jack's Magic Blue Stuff to prevent staining of the fiberglass gel coat. Jack's typically recommends 32 oz/10k gallons at start up/opening. And then 3-4 oz/10k per week.

Last year, before I found TFP, I used copper based algaecide to kill some black algae. And then I used powder shock to shock the pool (per the suggestion by non TFP morons) weekly. I started to get copper staining on the gel-coat. I panicked. I did add Jack's last year to try to get rid of the staining. I also ended up with some copper cyanaurate staining of my skimmer, ladders, and chlorine float (and the thermometer too).

The good news is that this year, when I opened to pool to a swamp (1 inch thick algae on the walls and floor), is the algae seem to "eat" or at least bleach the copper staining (it is gone). I put two bottles of Blue Stuff in after the pool cleared up because I was afraid of any staining. I am not on a heater, so we don't get copper leaching from that, it was only from the algaecide last year.

So what is TFP's stance on Jack's Magic Blue Stuff? Should I be adding 6ozs per week as recommended by the pool manufacturer?

If you are adding metals then yes. But if you are not adding metals, then why? Only add chemicals to your pool that testing directs you to.

Yep, I agree with you. Except that is the pool manufacturer, suggesting that not doing this would void the pool warranty. They also have no affiliation with Jack's, so it doesn't appear to be a "buy our product" suggestion.

I may just skip it for now and see how it goes, now that I know that the stains seem to be reversible.

I'm in Dundee. No water source, I have water trucked in. But I haven't had water added to the pool since last July, during a dry spell. With all this rain I've had to drain water!

My copper problem last year was my own doing.
