So last night I went to a family event. My sister has a pool at house her daughter lives in, and was in town for the event. So afterwards I asked her how she chlorinated her pool. She said 3" pucks. I said have you ever had any problems with the stabilizer gets too high.

Her: No. But if you take your water to the pool store, they'll test it and tell you what you need.
Me: Ok, I don't trust them though because they could sell me things I don't need. Plus I have an awesome testkit, I can test everything the pool store tests. And I have an app on my phone (Pool Math w/ subscription) that tells me exactly what I need to add.
Her; Oh.

She then lost interest! LOL So I went to my niece, who will be maintaining the pool moving forward, and told her to come to this site.

Since most people just "wing it" by doing the dump and pray / pool store potion methods.... and seem to think that as long as the water is mostly clear most of the time that everything must be totally fine... people are just very intimidated by a "new" or "different" way of doing things. Especially if it is contradictory to what the "experts" at the pool store taught them.

I think it truly takes someone hitting rock bottom (pool turns green and won't clear because CYA through the roof and pool store has sold them on hundreds of $$$ in magic potions) before they see the error in how they managed the pool before. Until then... good luck trying to convert them.

Amen! I told my neighbor about the site and how I converted to the TFPM of pool care (and how much time AND money I'm saving) but his eyes just glazed over. And the pool guy he has been using for years for $75/month neglected to add chlorine to his pool last month - hello, algae! They are fighting it now. I'm just watching from the sidelines.

When we bought the house, the previous owner said she had only used Leslie's for pool care and dumped whatever they recommended and never had an issue. But if I recall correctly, I think I remember her saying that they drained on occasion to "start fresh" but was no big deal because they were on a well. I also thought that the water looked "pretty good" but only after we took possession and started taking care of the pool the TFP way, did it get *really* clear...as a matter of fact, the dear wife made a comment just yesterday about how crystal clear the water looked and that she wanted to just drink it! :)

You can lead a horse to water...................

Most people simply have no idea what a clean and clear pool is, or how easy it can actually be.
All they know is what their own experience is.

With exception of new pool builds and folks looking for PB info, almost everyone here on TFP is here because their own experience with their pool went South. What used to work, no longer does and they are left holding the bag and they are hanging onto their sanity by the last thread.

I gave up long ago having any in depth conversation with other pool owners I know about water testing, chemistry and maintenance. They just dont "get it", and they won't listen until they finally reach their breaking point, or wake up one day and discover the wallet is empty.

My only problem is that I want to travel with my test kit - I don't think I've used a hotel pool since becoming a graduate of Pool School- the hotel pools never look very clean...

I did a diving training session in a hotel pool to qualify for a guided ocean dive in the Virgin Islands. Yeah, that was an eye-opener. I won't tell you how many bandaids I saw at the bottom of the pool.

My neighbors always think my water looks amazing but they also think it’s cause I obsess over it. Well I did first 2 seasons. Now I’m getting a feel for it and I have deff stepped back and let it just be because I know my pool. So my neighbors think it’s some crazy voodoo program I follow. Most my neighbors use pucks all the year when open and dump 1 gallon of chlorine per week. They also dump baking soda cause they say that’s how they make thier pool water shine.

I don’t even bother telling them my details. They see what they see. I answer questions if they ask but I don’t give any info cause people in general don’t change I have found.

My cousin texted me all nervous cause his salt cell said 4700. I told him get a test kit. He said but the cell. I said get a test kit. Didn’t hear from him in a week. Texted him. I said so. He said ya my pool company doubled up my salt cause they didn’t coordinate. So it must have been close. I didn’t even offer up about doing a drain. He asked what if my salt is too high. Didn’t even get into it cause I know his other numbers prob suck. He just accepted the salt was right and they messed up. I would have been ******. And his finish is the blacked pebble out there and we are in a winter close zone. All I said say one when his was done I was like mike keep on that color. Your Finish is triple the price of mine and you don’t want it to go back quick. Just stay on it. He never asked what I do knowing I run this program. You just don’t change people.

Do your thing and let your own pool shine! Lol. I know that sounds mean but it’s just easier down the road. Unless it’s anyone on here! I’m always up for teaching cause the folks and the people I have become friends with here taught me and I would be lost without them!

I can honestly say my pool has never looked better, even though it's only 3 weeks old. My old in ground was blue but cloudy, because I was on the pool store roller coaster. This place is the absolute BEST!

And if you're new and like what's happening to your pool under the TFP method, why not make a donation to keep the lights on? Everyone including you will be glad you did!:goodjob:
