Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Pool is finished!

From my own pebble experience and those I've seen on the site, I think a perfect finish is quite rare. Mine has some imperfections, and I found out later that the owner of my plaster company was extremely pleased with the job and proud of it as one of the best they had done. I certainly understand how you feel though, and I think most PBs and plaster companies create an expectation that it will be perfect.
 
What did you decide about the footprint? I'm wondering if they could redo just the shelf, not the whole pool, and put the seam between old and new right at the edge of the shelf. I can't say if that would be more or less noticeable than a foot print. And maybe it could leak? The problem I would have (not to rub salt in it) is that the footprint doesn't represent a bit of plaster work that was a bit "less perfect" than the rest. That I could embrace, eventually. It represents a moron who stepped in it, literally, and was completely avoidable by even the worst-skilled plasterer, let alone someone being careful. Uhg.

Every pool has a big ol' fat defect. Somewhere. Some worse than others. I call 'em birthmarks. That's what they are. Just like the one you have somewhere on you, it's not something you're happy about, but it's part of who you are. Well, your footprint is your pool's birthmark. Embrace it. Reduce it by making fun of it. Live with it. Love it. As you would a child no matter what his birthmark!

Mine is a big fat acid stain in my shallow end. No one but me knows it's there, but I see it all the time. Worse part, I did it myself while I was learning to care for my pool! Oh well, that's my birthmark, totally avoidable, but I did it, so I own it. It doesn't make swimming in my pool the teeny-tiniest bit less enjoyable, and that's the bottom line!! ;)

I agree with what you are saying about it representing someone being careless and a moron and stepping on it. So frustrating. If it was just an indent I could probably live with it but being that its an obvious foot print it does not sit well with me. The guy that did our pool school seemed confident they could fix it without there being a noticable patch because we caught it early. He said overtime you can see the difference because the rest of the plaster changes color after exposure to sunlight, ect but since we just had it done it would not be something that can be seen. I am not sure if he is just BS'ing me but we will see. He said given that it is on the sunshelf and not in the deep end would make it easier too. But then once the warranty department got our punch list she wrote me and said she was not sure what needed to be done about the foot prints because she had never come across this before and needed to get with the construction manager on it to see how to proceed. So now I am even more annoyed that this rarely or never happens with my PB and I am just the unlucky one.

Here in Redwood country I might try to find a big foot tile mosaic to add next to it (sort of like the turtles & dolphins others put on their pool floor) :stirpot:.

Seriously though, I would make them re-do it ASAP - patching the entire top of the shelf would be the least noticeable I would think. My shelf looks completely different than the rest of the pool anyway due to the water depth so you already see it a bit different than the rest of the pool which would hide any patch.

That's actually not a bad idea... if it wouldn't be in a totally weird location, maybe you can find some kind of decorative accent tile, like a dolphin or something to put in its place.
 
So I talked to the company that put the pebble tec in about options for the foot prints. We looked closer and noticed they go down the steps as well but it is so faint there I do not want to do anything to that area. He first offered to sand down the foot prints but warned me it probably would look different than the rest of the pool and as it stands now we can only see footprints at night with light on and last thing I want is for it to look worse and be visible day time. I asked about compensation if we decide to leave it be and he is looking into that for me now. We also discussed redoing the entire sunshelf. He said there would be a seam but it would be on the sides and not noticable unless you were in the pool looking for it. Not quite sure what to do at the moment but I guess it depends on how much they were willing to pay us for the mistake. If its enough it might be worth it to just live with the prints as much as it pains me to do that. There does not seem to be a good option for fixing it aside from redoing the whole pool which I have not asked for yet but doubt they would do anyway.
 
I think you should consider that night time foot print the *wabi sabi* of your pool.

Wabi sabi is the Japanese word for a small flaw that makes things beautiful in their simplicity of nature. Google the word. Perfection is over rated. You have a one of a kind pool now :)
