Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Pool is finished!

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

That's fantastic! I'm sure it was all those positive thoughts I sent you earlier! (As opposed to all the negative ones I sent yesterday!) I'm happy to have been proven wrong about how this was going to go down.

If all else goes well, be sure to give this guy a good Yelp review. He deserves it! He really stepped up. Very happy for you!!

Yes I will definitely recommend them to other people now. I actually have a friend shopping pool builders so this is a good story to share with her. This is our 2nd pool we have built with them and the same construction manager so we were really hoping they would work with us on this and thank God they came through.

WHAT???????????? ;party: oh yeah!!!!

Now know that IF there is any mixing of colors you WILL get a variety of said colors. Now I would hope they are not as wide a variety as Dirk had (though I think it turned out very pretty Dirk). What I tell people to do is go through the boxes. Pick out the REALLY pretty ones. Those will be used of the "sight line" places like the far side of the pool. This the place your eye falls first when you walk out to the pool. Then you take out and HIDE the really ugly ones! LOL Now the ugly ones can be used inside the skimmer if they are needed. I have even see where the PO writes the numbers on the back in the order they want them placed. This takes it all off the tilers and on the PO so you better get it right!

Sounds like a smart PB. Now it's a situation where they could easily have given you a hard time, but chose to do the right thing. As long as everything else goes well they now have a customer who will tell everyone who will listen about how great they are. Best and cheapest advertising is a happy customer.

Kim's MO is similar to what I was suggesting previously, about how to get a good inventory of tile. If you expect to be really fussy, or pick out a tile that will require a lot of hand sorting/selecting, then buy extra. 5%, 10% (in addition to what the tile setter normally wants extra for his process). This allows you to throw away the duds (or return them, depending on where they are purchased). The percentage of this "buffer stock" would be based on how fussy you might want to get. The more extras you have, the more you can burn. You want to buy them all up front, so that they all come from the same lot (as much as possible).

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

We went to the showroom and picked out another tile. Out of curiosity today I went to the tile manufacturers website and once again it looks totally different. I told the PB I need to go to the manufacturer and see the actual inventory before I can make a final decision. The "variance" on these tiles is crazy. This one is an even bigger variance than the last one. At least now I have learned and am doing my homework ahead of time.

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

When you view them at the manufacturer's, take them outside into the sun. Check them again when you get home. Lighting and surrounding items play tricks on your perception of color.

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

Our PB had us pick from 4 different catalogs and then said he would bring the tiles to us so that we could view them here. Perhaps this is why... so we could view them in our lighting inside and outside. We ended up picking our #1 choice from the catalogs and the tile looks great. So this is definitely a learning experience for all!

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

Not that anyone asked...

I do color for a living, on a computer screen. I had to paint my new office four times, to achieve a perfectly neutral grey color. Everything I purchased for the office is as grey as I could find. The walls, ceiling, cabinets, file cabinets, knobs, printers, fax machine, desks and counters, all black, white or grey (mostly grey)! My computer screens are shaded with with giant light-blocking hoods (dark grey, of course), to eliminate glare from the overhead lights, which are of a special light temperature. My computers' desktop pattern is solid grey. No sunlight allowed. No pictures on the walls. I work in a colorless cave, so that when I look at an object on my color-calibrated monitors, it is not influenced in any way by any other color "touching" my eye or reflecting on the screens.

Time of day, time of year, weather, deck color, water, pool finish color, edge tile color, plants, house color, fence color (and anything else in your field of vision) will all affect your perception of color. You can't eliminate those variables in your yard, like I did in my office, so you embrace them instead. Everything in your vision in your yard will affect the color of everything else. So certainly when you are selecting the color of anything, it has to ultimately be done in the yard. Without the final finish or water in the pool, you're missing some important factors, of course, but you do the best you can and then adjust your expectations accordingly...

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

That is so true about how the color looks different depending on where you are, time of day, ect. The tile we most recently picked out looked so different in the showroom vs outside. We are going for a key west/ beach theme for our backyard. There will be crushed shells in the garden beds and a weathered wood tiki bar, tropical landscape, ect. So we were trying to keep that in mind when picking our new tile. We found one that is sort of iridescent so the color changes from sun vs shade and also the angels you look at it. It kind of reminded us of those shiny polished shells so we thought it would add to the theme we were going for. Now all of this only works if the color is right, if not we are back at square one.

Love the theme idea! What are crushed shells? Literally shards of shells? Can you walk barefoot on them? My first vision was of my middle one tiptoeing through my landscaping to recover the basketball he pretended to toss at the hoop but was really trying to brain his brother with. Barefooted kids and landscaping interact around a pool. Something to consider if you'll have kids or sports in the pool... Mine get slivers from my redwood mulch.

Does this mean there'll be a hammock? This is somewhere in Key West:

A hammock would be something to consider for sure! Our pool will be screened in because we in florida, way too many bugs. The crushed shell garden bed will be outside the screen so I do not think it will be as much of an issue with the kids walking on it, at least I hope not.

Kids and toys inside, shells outside, perfect. I hope you keep the pic's coming as you add things...

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

We went back to the showroom today and ended up switching to something totally different. We picked a blue glass tile. I finally feel like we made the right choice. I can't wait to see it installed. They delivered our pavers today but that won't be happening until we get the tile out and replaced. I am hoping they are able to get this scheduled soon so we don't get too delayed.

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

I'm not a big fan of glitzy things, but I have to admit I do like that glass tile look. Pics!! We need pics!! ;)

Re: Not happy with tile choice-advice please! UPDATE: Tile is not the right color

That glass tile will really add to the tropical feel you want and it will just oh so pretty! I would love to see a pic of the tile you picked out! Do you have the brand and color name written down? I could look it up.
