new pool in tucson az

Wow! It looks great! You’re going to have a beautiful coloured water. We are up to same stage. We had pebble today with acid wash and fill tomorrow (Friday here, Thursday for you). Were you home to see it?
Yes I am on graveyard shift, traded an hour, got home early, stayed up and watched, got 3 hours of sleep, thank goodness this is last night shift

Having a second look at your design. I really like that giant second step. Mine extends out and forms a bench, which is useful, but I'd love to have it bigger like yours. My little ones would live on it. See, now this looks to be a good use of real estate. I always question those big baja shelves. Six inches deep or whatever. I just don't get 'em. I just wouldn't be comfortable on a lounge over 6" of water. I like to lay on a towel, and a pillow. I like to have a drink and a book and my phone handy. How does that work over a big puddle of water? And kids splashin' around. Or I want to get up and go into the house for my snack and I have to wade off my chair. And do people lay on their shelves? On the pebble surface? That's what floaties are for!! Don't get it. But a big shelf like that, to sit on, play with the kids, dangle feet over the side, THAT makes sense to me. Perfect for learning swimmers and those that can't swim yet. Along with a separate bench on the exact opposite side to get away from all the littles on the shelf, that's just about perfect. Nice job...

Awesome find today....total sarcasm. My auto feeder doesn’t have the float part, my skimmer doesn’t have the basket! Not the surprises I needed. They either got thrown away or never there.

Anyone that did a start up with a SWG? I am reading that during the first month, I bypass the SWG, either valves around( which mine is not) or get a sleeve. I’m going to try and get the fittings today.

Now for real good news, tracking test kit via USPS, shows checked into Tucson station at 2300, I assume it will make it to my house by Friday, maybe today

thank you, but I must confess that was the idea of the excavation crew, I originally had just steps.

You can do without autofill for a while. No problem. But you gotta have that basket. Get the PB on that first thing today. You want to turn that pump on the minute the water hits halfway up the skimmer. Don't do that without the basket.

No salt, no SWG for at least the first month. Don't let the PB do otherwise (some would). You don't need to bypass the SWG or take it out. Mine was inline for six months before I added salt and turned it on. No problem. Just set the output to 0. It won't turn on without salt anyway. I did that for months, then later decided to power it down. I did so by pulling its fuse, which worked, but I was later told that some of the Pentair fuse holders are weak, so I won't do that again. Mine unplugs from the transformer (I just hadn't noticed that before I pulled the fuse, or I would have just unplugged it). But if yours is hardwired to a controller, that might not be available to you. Some are wired to a dedicated breaker. No matter, turn it off if you can. Otherwise just set it to zero. It'll be fine.

If you're worried about it, you can buy Pentair's slug and take it out of the plumbing all together. They're not cheap. And then you really do have to disconnect it. You'll have to deal with this every year, when the water gets too cold to use the SWG. So either leave it in all the time (I plan to), or get the slug and take it out every year. I think there are plenty here that do one or the other.

If it were mine, I wouldn't build a bypass for it, if that's what you're planning. Just more valves and elbows and glue joints to fail.

I am the pool pool builder as “owner build”. I am going to check the “stuff” to see if it’s there, but I am pretty sure I would remember a basket.

I found a pool pool supply company in phonies that makes the pentair sleeve for a lot less. I talked to him yesterday, he explained how they make them.

I was was wondering if I would hurt the SWG, mine is wired, but the cord hasn’t been attached to the transformer.

I am am going to go back to the pool supply store and inquire about missing parts, the issue that concerns me is, it’s a “contractors only” store, I am hoping they can see my receipt and see I didn’t get all the parts.

Let us know how the sleeve works out for you. Others might want one.

If the SWG is not connected yet, perfect. Just leave it that way for a month, whether you replace it with the sleeve or not. What are your concerns about hurting the SWG? Leave it inline, powered on or off. Set output to zero if powered on. Remove it for sleeve, powered off, stored in its box or otherwise protected from the elements (like from whatever might crawl inside it). I think that's all there is to it.

I wasn’t sure if the flow would hurt it. I am going to go with your idea and not plug in for a month, but I will build a sleeve for the future, just not for tomorrow!

One problem solved!
Basket and water level next

This is what I think I know: an SWG has a finite number of hours of life (10000 for our Pentairs). Those hours are consumed when the plates are producing chlorine. When voltage is applied to the plates. Not when the unit has power, only when that Cell light is on (which is based on the output setting). If the rare metals on the plates are losing anything to just water flow alone, it would be an infinitesimal amount compared to what else they're subjected to. Which is why I'm going to leave mine inline. That said, using the sleeve would seem to be a reasonable precaution for long term, if you don't mind the extra effort involved.

Test kit should be delivered today. I am going to fill a mason jar with end of hose water and test as filling?

Was that a question? Yes is the answer! Except...

Go to Leslie's (if you have one) and ask for a sample bottle to bring them your pool water to test. They're free. (A little fib. Sometimes I let Leslie's test my water so they'll give me my 5% chlorine discount. So I don't feel guilty. I've given them plenty of dough for chlorine and MA and CYA.)

Their little sample bottle is the perfect thing for collecting water and squirting it into your kit's test vials. Better than mason (You don't want glass around your pool. Accident waiting to happen. Getting glass shards out of a body of water is virtually impossible. Not without using your feet, anyway!)

Before you go to Leslie's, practice this first. Put one hand over each ear and sing "La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la..." Use this little-known maneuver to get out of the Leslie's store without buying anything!

What are all the water paths from, those leading down to the pond from the tile, benches, shallow end, etc? Are they ongoing, or drying up and leaving no traces?

I'd like to see less hose touching, too, if possible. Probably nothing, but a PB did warn a new owner against fill hoses touching plaster. He saw it leave a mark in one of his pools. Probably the hose he used, but play it safe.
