Two questions:
1. Why the heck does the line from the skimmer make that big inverted U instead of a straight line out?
2. Have you considered placing unions between your pump intake, pump to filter line, and filter to heater? It is much easier to service equipment when you can pull it out for repairs.

I wasn't home when they plumbed the skimmer, so didn't have a chance to ask the PB about it. He did say they plumbed the skimmer line just for the plumbing inspection today and will have to cut and re-do the skimmer for the tile. Assuming they gave extra room to re-plumb the line after tile.

I asked the PB to add unions to all equipment. I thought the black rings were the unions. Am I mistaken?

It's kind of difficult to tell from the photos but there is a ring that unscrews then they are unions.

Question to the group about the location of the overflow pipe. See below image. Overflow pipe is to the left without the cap. It's 11 inches from the coping (even with the return pipe) which tells me it would be located under the waterline. Does this seem normal? I was thinking the overflow would be located above the waterline to automatically divert water once it reaches the overflow. Appreciate opinions and if I should check with the PB on this. Thanks!

Are you SURE that is the overflow pipe? If so, yes it should be higher like you are thinking. Ask your PB for sure!

The builder plan shows an "O" at the pool and another "O" at the edge of the deck, so I'm assuming it stands for overflow. You can see the 2'' PVC sticking up in the background where the drain should be located. I'll double check with the PB this week. Thank Kim!

Are you getting the autofill? That's about the placement for my autofill which is also a round pipe like yours. My overflow is a small rectangular drain grate which covers a larger pipe opening to the deck drains and is set just above the waterline.

SUZ! Good job! I bet that is what it is as the overflow would not have a pipe sticking up like that. It will have pipe underground all the way to where it will discharge. Now why they have an O in those places?? The PB will have to solve that mystery.

Ok, just heard back from the PB and it is the overflow line! We're not getting an autofill, just overflow. If you look closely in the background you will see the PVC sticking out of the ground. This is the other end of the overflow line that is 90'd off the overflow line coming from the pool. He said they will cut that pipe to the correct overflow height. This was over email, so didn't have a chance to explain the overflow setup in depth.

It sounds like the pipe will always be filled with water up to the same water line as the pool. As the pool fills with rain (daily occurrence in FL the water level will rise in the pipe and eventually hit the drain, which I'm assuming would be slightly over the water line.

Anyone else have a similar overflow setup? Maybe it's more effective way of handling the heavy downpours we get in the summer? Worries me a bit that I haven't seen this type of overflow on TFP.

Appreciate any thoughts good or bad!

Since I'm only familiar with the set up I have, I can't say about yours. My memory is sketchy, but it seems like my PB had forgotten about my overflow. The grate was put in right at the end. So.... my set up could be a last minute work around. Lol!! Your set up is similar in idea for my auto fill to keep the water level correct.

I will say I like my overflow grate at the waterline, so it works for me. Since my waterline tile has no pattern, the grate gives me a great visual to see when my water level is getting low. I've turned off my auto fill - didn't like it - so I don't depend on the auto fill.

It might be a good way to do it........ask to go see one of his other pools and look at it and ask the home owner how it works.

When I do a google search I did see a couple that had pipes sticking up like he is talking about doing yours.

I am more used to seeing it how Suz has hers. At the tile line so there is only water in it when the water in the pool gets too high.

I hope you share what he says so we can all learn along with you.

I brought up my concern about algae blooming from the sitting water (thanks Kim!) and he said he hasn't received one complaint from owners about algae. He did say it would be a simple fix of pouring a little bleach in the drain IF I did see any algae in the drain.

The pool owners backed up the PB's claim that they haven't had any issues with the overflow & algae.

It was comforting to hear specifically from the owners

Tile and Coping is done! . . except the spillway. ran out of tile We had to wait a few weeks for their best tile guy to complete a job. Couldn't believe the amount of prep-work. Two full days of work resurfacing the tile and coping areas with concrete to make the substrate completely level.

Coping is Colorado travertine
Tile is TileExpressions Caribbean Sea AquaMarine

I do have one question regarding grout. While inspecting the job, I noticed a few sections of tiles that have gaps in the grout towards the bottom of the tile line. Pic below. Should I bring this up to the PB? Not sure if this area would be filled in with plaster or not.

LOVING that tile! WOWER! Love the color, size, and shape!

Grout-I would want the grout all of the way down. To me having plaster there would look sloppy. It should be easy for them to fix.

Nice to know about that kind of overflow. Nice that you were able to talk to "real" people that have used this system. LOL on the poor bush by it. I would put some bleach down the tube at least once a month. Say the first Saturday of each month. See how it goes from there.

It is a legitimate method of discharge.

You will not have an algae problem, just as atmospheric suction vents do not create algae problems.

Thanks for chiming in PoolguyinCT. It seems many pool overflows are plumbed underwater with 2'' PVC in central FL, so there must be a reason for it.

Not much activity this week with Matthew on his way to cause some havoc. Paver crew formed the footers for the back of the raised deck and ran the copper bonding wire around the pool.

One question I had for the forum is if anyone installed a sub drain, instead of a channel drain, for their pool deck. Wanted opinions on size of pipe, spacing and number of spot drains, etc. Any input on the optimal sub drain setup would be appreciated as they should be starting it soon.

Finally some more progress! They finished tiling the spillway and started the deck, but ran out of pavers to finish the raised decks. Funny how the PB was short on both tile and pavers. Tile guy said it's a common occurrence that the PB is short on material. Seems like they are trying to minimize overage, but it has to cost the PB more in the long run when the subs have to come out for extra trips.

Electric panel is up and I have a question for any Jandy automation owners with a SWG. On some Jandy panels I've seen a small LCD controller in the recessed little box to the left of the RS4 controls. Does this come standard on all RS4 units? I have iAquaLink 2.0 and a PureLink Power center panel. I believe I can control the SWG on my phone with the iAquaLink, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything without the SWG controller at the panel. Thanks!
