New Pool Build - Northern California

Just finished up with the project manager and had our pool school.

Everything is up and running and working correctly. All of the jets, valves, and settings have been tested and the filter and pump are running. The automatic cover is being installed and will be finished today.

Our chemical additions were 4lbs of CYA powder (more later if needed), 24oz of MA, and the bottles of Beautec Scale remover I posted in an earlier post.

PH was just a little high, and Free Chlorine was at 0 of course, CH was at 300 I think. We also checked a few other settings, but since the water is just in - not much is needed beyond CL and MA to control PH shifts. He will up the CYA in a couple of weeks if it is below the target they want of 40-50 - I told him I would prefer it at 60-70 once the SWG is switched on and he was fine with that - even though he said Jandy wants is closer to 40. I think with the addition we added we will sit at about 40...

The TF-100 test kit will be used starting tonight to check everything.

I referred to the TF-100 test kit as POOL KIT 2.0 to the Project Manager and their supplied simple kit as 1.0 - he joked that theirs was less than 1.0 after seeing ours!

We are not adding chlorine until tomorrow morning as instructed - one gallon to start.

For the next 4 weeks all I am told to add is MA to keep the PH at or near 7.2, and chlorine

Edit ---

Just retested CH and it is 175

We now have the cover installed.

The coping cover pieces need to be adjusted a bit at the ends - hopefully that will get done soon.

Also, I started to build out the pergola - finished the rafters and beams last night before dinner. Today I will work on the lattice.

Oh myyyyyyy! I've missed so much, especially the exciting parts of plaster and fill!!! I've been so busy taking care of my newly filled pool - today is Day 6.

SantaCruz, it is all amazing! Your fence and gate, the plaster job, the pool filled with gorgeous water, and now the pergola! I love it all. And AmyJo's term, architectural, is perfect for your home and pool! I love how distinctive it is. I'm so glad to see Superman having fun in the water! My parents always said nothing relaxes you like playing in water!

Congratulations!
Suz.

We are now swimming regularly - and still finishing up some projects. Over the weekend I was able to complete the main part of our pergola, and some of our equipment area was screened off. I now need to do some serious cleaning - I have already collected several loads of concrete junk, gunite chunks, nails, screws, rocks and other trash! We also need to find someone to do the irrigation hook up and landscaping. I need to decide if we are putting any grass in yet, or waiting. With the current drought a new lawn (even 20ftx20ft) seems crazy, but I need to do something with the bare dirt!

Below is a nice photo shot this morning.

Our pergola looks like it is done at this point, but we still need to add some lights, speakers and a TV mount. We also have some lounge chairs I still need to bring around from our front patio, and the pregola still needs the extra support legs added to each post.

Your Pergola looks great! Way to go, Santa Cruz! You must have such a great feeling every time you look out on your retreat!

I think I have the same Adirondack chairs! I got mine (aqua plastic) from several places. Lowe's, Target, Walmart. Funny, they all had the same sticker label. They were a good deal, I thought, and very comfortable.

Suz.

Thanks Suz - yes the chairs we got from Lowes for $13 each! Hard to beat at that price. We will replace them when they fade or dry out...The Lowes models are more comfortable than the HD ones and others we tried as they have a larger lumbar bump out which I love.

We also bought some loungers at Costco back in the spring when they were in the store - we just put them up on the deck area after I took the photo.

Oh man!!! You got a great deal on your chairs. Mine were $18 each. I just thought I had a good deal..... and I had to pay tax on top of the $18. But I agree. The lumbar support really surprised me for such an inexpensive chair that I can even set in the SWG system water. And what really surprised me is that getting up out of them is quite easy for me. I can't always say that for a low sitting chair. (I guess you can tell I really like these chairs)

The cover looks good on your pool. It will come in handy! And great going on your water chemistry!

Thought I would drop in with a anniversary one year update!

We are really enjoying our first full summer with the pool. Very happy we found this site while building and maintaining our pool!!!!

Our latest water tests are:

Temp 89°
FC 5.0
CC 0
PH 7.5
TA 90 (High TA Fill Water drives this up a bit)
CH 250
CYA 40 -- (AUTO COVER IS CLOSED 90% OF THE TIME - SO OUR LOWER CYA)

Some random thoughts on the year.

* We are getting amazing heat retention from our dark green auto cover. For the last month we have had temps ranging from 87°-90°
* Don't think we will ever need solar heating
* Robot, Hairnets in skimmer basket, and a safety cover keep the pool very clean
* We have cleaned the filter 2 times in 12 months (once would have been fine I think)
* Our pergola isn't quite complete with regards to speakers, lights and extra electrical - I am still trying to decide if the TV is all we need
* Water chemistry has been pretty easy to handle thanks to our TF-100 Test kit, this site, and the SWG
* This weekend we watched the Tour De France on the TV while in the Pool - can't wait for football season!
* Jandy controls sure could use some better software - but we do like the automation convenience
* We only run the SWG at about 25% with the cover on and 40% with it off which keeps the FC between 4.5-6.5
* We are running the VS pump at 1000rpm and only 69 watts!

Fantastic! I'm glad to hear everything is going so well and that you are enjoying your cover.

I totally agree with the Jandy software. I have the PDA and the remote is horrible. Half of the time lines don't show up on the display, it seems to get confused a lot when syncing, and it takes forever to boot. I should design my own automation setup. Nevermind I am not that crazy.

I think that the software app they have for Android/Apple, and the web interface, are a copy of how their PDA works. I didn't want the PDA, but now I am stuck with their "button based" poorly laid out software...I thought about asking one of my programmers to look at their API and see if we could come up with a better solution - but I have decided it isn't worth it.

I would love for the software to have some things you could program to change the run times based on temperature, weather, season, pool use etc...If the pool temp reaches 90° switch the pump run time to night...if the outside temperature drops below 70° during the day for several days - switch the pump run time to daytime. How about being able to input the current FC levels and it could start to learn how to dose the SWG and adjust the filter run time (kind of like how a Nest thermostat learns your schedule)?

I have found one crazy software bug - with the cover closed there is a setting in the setup to "reduce the filtration". This is a nice idea and it works perfectly with the SWG settings. However, for the filtration setup it only works when you set it to reduce the filter run time by 75% or greater (it does nothing if you set it to 5%-70%). Right now I run the pump 8 HRS covered daily - so I would have to run it all day (or for 32 HRS) to have 75% equal 8 HRS of run time with pool covered...there aren't 32HRS in a day!

Their ePump speed setup along with the confusing AUX assignments and one touch buttons are also poorly implemented - it is not very user friendly for sure!

Santacruz, are you saying you don't like the iAquaLink2? I also have the PDA and really don't like it for the reasons Umm stated. I was thinking of upgrading to the iAquaLink because it would be easier but now I'm unsure.
