Upgrading to Cartridge Filter - A Couple of Questions

I'm getting ready to replace my 32 year old Hayward sand filter with a new cartridge filter. And while I'm at it, I'll be replacing my Hayward Super Pump. I have a 16300 gallon vinyl pool. I've decided on the Hayward SwimClear C3030 (325 sq ft) cartridge filter and a Hayward Super Pump VS (W3SP2603VSP).
My question concerns pvc piping. My existing system uses 1-1/2" pipe. The Super Pump comes with 1-1/2" connections but the SwimClear comes with 2" connections. Would it be worth increasing the above ground pvc piping I have, piping I can access, from pump suction to the discharge going in-ground, from 1-1/2" to 2" or just replace the piping I need to install the new pump and filter with the original 1-1/2" size? I really can't see the minimal piping replaced having any noticeable improvement, but it never hurts to ask.

Pool heater missing from Spa function

Thank you in advance!

I recently went to turn on our Spa as the pool got a little chilly for our guests this week. However it seems like the heater has disassociated itself from the “spa” function in the app (and on the control panel). Any idea how to add the heater back to the spa function? It is available on the Pool selection but I don’t want to turn it on for the pool.

Heat pump advice needed

Hello I just installed a Intex 18 x 48 Prism pool, I upgraded to the Intex 3000 GPH Sand filter with the 15,000 gallon Chlorine generator . I Am looking at the Hayward HP50AEE heat pump, the pool store says my Intex pump wont even have enough flow to use the heat pump, however based on the flow stats my Filter flows well above the Maximum recommended for the Heat pump... Anyways before I drop $3000 CDN to install this Heat pump I'd like a more educated opinion , thank you in advance

Can’t get pool clear

Help please!
Have a Bestway Power Steel above ground pool with original pump. Only our second year with it and didn’t realize I had not opened the valve for the filter when we set up so we had a bit of what I believed to be a mustard algae problem. Used clarifier and algaecide. Continually brushed the pool and Cleaned the filter 3+ times a day. Constantly running pump. Was getting slightly better.

Joined this group and learned of Pool Rx+. Added that with a skimmer Thursday evening. Started to help a bit (I know it can take a few days) and I believe we only had some dead algae. Continued brushing and cleaning filter. Water was still greenish so Tested levels yesterday and there was zero chlorine. Last night, dissolved a bag of shock in water and added to the pool.

Levels seem good now but water is now much cloudier and more teal and filter is green (not the mustard yellow color it has been).

I’m guessing I did something wrong but now, how do I fix it?

Any help is appreciated!

Most annoying pool insect…

Just curious what everybody’s most annoying pool insect is. Mine is HANDS DOWN the “Winged” Ant. These things are rediculous. Several times during the swimmer it’s Winged Ant season and they come in swarms! I can pull them out with the net but they just keep coming! I call them the Kamikaze Ants as I can visibly see them flying straight down slamming into the water!
Anybody know how to control these things? I saw a post a king time ago about somebody purring a tennis ball in the water and the ants congregate to it. I could never get that to work.

Switch from Cal Hypo to Liquid Chlorine

Hi all,

I want to switch to liquid chlorine. My pool has been a pain this year mainly because the FC levels have been difficult to maintain with powdered cal hypo. I also do not want to keep adding calcium to my pool. It is cloudy recently, so I plan to SLAM until things are in check.

Current levels and questions are below.

  1. Can I immediately switch to liquid chlorine, like today? I put 6lb of cal hypo in last night.
  2. Can you add liquid chlorine at any time of day?
  3. What is the method for adding liquid chlorine? (Dump straight in pool? Brush?)

Current levels:
TA = 100
pH = 7.4
FC = 2.4
CC = 0.5
CYA = 40-50

Thanks!

Here We Go Again - Perfect Chemical Balance + Algae

Well, the story repeats itself. I returned from a 5 day vacation to find algae in the pool. I immediately thought the chlorine must be low. To my surprise, here are the readings using my test kit:

FC 12
CC 0
PH 7.5
TA 90
CH 400
CYA 70
NA 3800
CSI -.11

I even put half a bottle of algaecide in the pool before I left. My son checked the pool on Wednesday, and all was fine. Folks at the pool store said they've had a record number of algae complaints. Has the algae become resitant to chlorine? How on earth can I have algae? I solved my circulation issue 2 years ago. It's now Dang near a whirlpool. What on earth could be the cause??

Alien strain of algae perhaps? :LOL:

Black algae? 🤔

New to TFP...stumbled upon the site a week or so ago after getting upset that pool store was trying to sell me baking soda for $60. Our pool was finished at the end of August last year and we are complete newbs trying to figure things out after the fact 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Current issue: I noticed black stuff on the bottom of the pool last week and after searching thought it might be black algae (we also had what I think was mustard algae as well). After receiving my TF-100 my initial numbers on 7/3 were:
FC- 0
pH- 8.0
TA- 100
CH 375
CYA- 50

I've been slamming (& addressed the pH and CH) & brushing daily w a wire brush since then. I have passed the OCLT the passed two nights and my numbers this morning are:
FC- 22
pH- 8.2 (I added the amount of MA suggested by PM)
TA- 100
CH- 450
CYA- 45

The other/mustard algae is gone, however the black stains persist (see pic), so I'm not sure if this is black algae or something else 🤷🏾‍♀️ (I have not tried the scrape/smear).
Also of note my hubs thinks I'm nuts for trying these "home remedies" and that I should "leave this to the professionals", but I think that's part of our problem (being at the mercy of so-called pros). 🥴

TIA

Help identifying Pentair light model

I have searched and searched and cannot find the model or part number of this color changing pool light. When I google the numbers on the chassis what I find doesn’t correspond to what I am seeing inside. It has two bulbs and a mechanism to rotate different color lenses. I think the bulbs are 12v LED. No Edison style receptacles.

It is not working and I would like to find the manual. The gasket leaked and it has had water in it for a long time. Might be shot but maybe I can just replace the bulbs. Hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

identify pool sweep fitting

i am having trouble identifying and finding an adapter for a port on the side of my pool that is in parallel with the suction side of the pool (skimmers and main drains) that is labeled "pool sweep". there is a 3-way diverter where this connects to the rest of the suction side plumbing at the pad, and this port is normally closed. my inference is that one would attach either a suction-driven robot or a pool vacuum to this port in the pool and open the diverter in that case.

the port in question is roughly 1.5 in in diameter, threaded, and is nearly flush with the wall of the pool. i would like to get a threaded fitting that allows me to connect to my 1.5 in vacuum hose for easy vacuuming without using a vacuum plate and a skimmer basket. after some cursory searching, i have not found anything obvious that would do the trick.

possibly relevant: this pool install was completed in late 2008 and most of the equipment originally installed is jandy.

thanks for reading!

Which Lights?

I have Pentair Quick Niches (620004) in my pool. It was originally configured for 120v lighting, I converted it to 12v 6 years ago with Hayward Color Logic lights.

One of the lights is now failing, and I need to switch them again. The options with my Niche's seem to be

Hayward Color Logic
J&J ColorSplash (now owned by Hayward)
Jandy Watercolors

Does anyone have a recommendation on which light has the best longevity?

RS-485 Surge Protection

Hi All,

I’m preparing to add RS-485 Surge protection to my 2 IntelliPro VSF pumps, MasterTemp and IntelliChem data lines. I will use the SerialComm RS-485 Surge Protector as recommended here. My plan is to add a ground bus (top right in picture below) to handle all the additional ground wires (8, for the 4 surge suppressors), 12 awg (flexible, stranded) for ground wires and excess wire from my VSF communication cable to reconnect the surge suppressors back to the IntelliCenter control boards.

Is this plan the best way to go? I’m going to add many additional wires and the suppressors to a relatively small area. Is the ground bus approach and placement ok? Should I rather place the suppressors for the MasterTemp and IntelliChem in their units and not inside the IntelliCenter Control Power Center? Other considerations?

Thanks,

Tony

Bypassing Prologic

We are getting a communication error on our Hayward Prologic Aqua Plus System causing nothing to work (Pump, salt system etc. ). I followed the troubleshooting video with a multimeter and the I believe the transformer is bad. It's under warranty and a tech is coming next Friday. In the meantime how do I keep my pool clean? Can I bypass the Prologic system to make my pump work and if so, how?

Another option is that I have a portable generator with correct plug and ratings. Can I plug the pump right into that to run the pump for a few hours and not hurt the rest of the system?

Orange stains on bottom of fiberglass pool

Hi, I have a 30 year old fiberglass pool that has some orange staining on the bottom of the pool by the edges. The pool cleaners have scrubbed it, and have no answer accept to say that the pool is old. I have been looking at some of the threads to try to figure it out. I have seen that you should test the stains by putting crushed vitamin C in a sock and rubbing it on the stain. Not sure that would help under the water though? I have also seen something about blue magic? Also an expensive suggestion to resurface the pool which i’m not sure how that would work since I’ve always been told you could never completely empty the fiberglass pool of water? I don’t know what to do. It looks terrible. any recommendations?

Hello from Europe :)

Hello everyone,
I stumbled upon this forum and its nice welcoming members when trying to find a solution for my problem with FLOC not wanting to leave my pool :)
I am posting from Slovakia in Europe, its getting almost 30 degrees celsius and I am currently desperately stuck waiting for the floc to fall down, so I can vaacum (to waste, as I have learned) at least a bit of the surface before it again whirls everywhere and clouds the whole pool.
I am not even going to start talking about all the useless, overpriced containers of various chemicals we have bought to try to get this pool running.
Anyways, its just an ordinary 3,66metres in diameter above ground pool that we have slightly recessed into the ground with sand filtration. This is the second season that we use the pool, so it was my first experience winterizing the pool, and first time I seem to have some issues with it.

This is how it looks now, there is some progress already. Hopefully I will not have to post into the help section anytime soon :)

North GA pool needs replacement liner (Blairsville GA)

Our liner is on its last legs. Any recommendations in the North GA area? We’re in Blairsville and most likely our nearest source would be Gainsville or Atlanta. If not, since I’m just beginning my research and have lots of questions regarding liner options, what ?’s for contractor etc. Current status is plumbing is in great shape and only issue besides liner separating from coping and many ripples and one patch on the bottom. There is a small leak in one of the skimmers that’s holding each season after repair but know time is running out. Thanks for any input!
