Pentair IntelliChem

The IntelliChem Water Chemistry Controller automatically monitors the pool's pH and sanitizer levels and adjusted them with acid in an Acid Canister and chlorine in a Chlorine Canister.

We do not recommend using the IntelliChem, because the probes often go bad, need to be calibrated or provide bad inputs.[1]

The pH side of the intelliChem is pretty accurate and does a decent job maintaining the pH. The downside though is regular testing is still required to make sure the pH probe and dosing is doing what it's supposed to be doing and replacement sensors are expensive.[2]

The chlorine sensing side uses ORP which has proven to be problematic and unreliable in all pools except those that are covered and have CYA levels below 20-30ppm and even then there are still issues.

The flow metering requires higher than ideal flow rates which means wasted electricity.

IntelliChem Controller Configurations

Appendix A, page 57, in the IntelliChem Installation Manual describes the configurations.

In 2016 Pentair changed pump heads on the acid containers from a ShurFlo pump to a Stenner pump. The Stenner pump is blue and described in Pentair documents as the "blue pump'.

Flow Switch Placement

If you have a spa it is advisable to pull the incoming flow to the IntelliChem flow switch from the pool return side of the plumbing so when Spa mode is active there will be no flow to the switch.[3]

Acid Canister

Pentair IntelliChem Acid Canister.jpg

The acid canister has a 3-1/2 gallon capacity container and an internal piercing mechanism to puncture the muriatic acid bottle seal allowing easy filling without spills.

The siphon tube is inside the pump head. It runs on rollers to create suction to send acid to the pool return. They generally need to be replaced every year because they get eaten up by the acid.[4]

Acid not Dosing

The pins that the nylon rollers are riding on inside the pump head can back out about 1/8”, so the rollers are crooked and not putting enough pressure on the tube. Put them back in place and it will work fine.[5]

Tips

  • keep a spare roller assembly handy as they corrode badly and stop working[6]
  • fill the acid tank 2/3 acid 1/3 water. It does require re-filling more often but the equipment lasts long due to the diluted acid.[7]

Intellichlor

When the IntelliChem controls the IntelliChlor it runs the SWG at 100% output until the ORP achieves set point. It doesn’t matter what you set the IC to in the EasyTouch or IntelliCenter panel, the IntelliChem is the big boss man.[8]

And that’s exactly the problem with IntelliChem/ORP control - it tends to not be representative of the actual FC level and so you are chasing a “ghost in the machine” which means your SWG is hammering away at 100% output while the ORP probe dances a jig.

ORP Settings

See around Page 9 & 26 of the INTELLICHEM WATER CHEMISTRY CONTROLLER INSTALLATION AND USER’S GUIDE[9]. It looks like it says ORP Sensitivity should be Off with a SWG.

CYA Level

Follow the * to page 27 in the INTELLICHEM WATER CHEMISTRY CONTROLLER INSTALLATION AND USER’S GUIDE[10].

Pentair guidelines take SWG CYA up to 50 which is the low end of TFP recommendations. TFP recommended levels are not based on using ORP sensors. CYA can interfere with ORP sensors. So the Intellichem is outside the scope of TFP recommended levels.[11]

Operational Tips

To get consistent readings:[12]

  • try to keep pool at a consistent temp
  • Temp changes will affect the orp readings as well as salinity readings and the system fails as the fall/winter approaches.
  • run pump 24/7 but at the lowest energy settings.- more time for the system to do what it has too.
  • Very minimal cya-- less than 30.
  • High sensitivity on the ph probe.
  • Keep orp a little on the high side-- If a cover opens it can drop quickly due to uv.
  • add low level borates (about 2 boxes 20mule team ) per season. I find it helps stabilize PH even better.
  • Get used to your numbers-- especially when opening and closing a cover. The PH shifts with off gassing ect will be corrected when the cover closes.
  • Get to know your own ORP number at the correct FCL level. The absolute number is less important then how it consistently correlates with your FCL.
  • If you are in doubt about your ORP probe readings- may need to replace it or the cable. the cables fail too. If that fails could be the motherboard which is replaceable.
  • Low CYA does make the FC drop quickly for pool parties. If there will be a heavy bather load up the orp the night before to increase fc or worse case add some liquid chlorine[13]

Problems

ORP readings are all over place

ORP readings are high at night (800), and low during daylight (600).

This is likely because the probe canister is getting hit by direct sunlight. You can try black neoprene around the canister. The instructions say to install it away from direct sunlight.[14]

pH Low and ORP Negative

Pentair IntelliChem Probes Reversed.jpg

Check that the pH and ORP probes are not swapped in their sensors.[15]

ORP is red wire.

pH is blue wire.

ph > 7.8 Lockout - Sanitizer feed locked

On page 48 of the INTELLICHEM WATER CHEMISTRY CONTROLLER INSTALLATION AND USER’S GUIDE[16] it explains “LOCKOUT”. Essentially if the pH goes above 7.8, the assumption is the sanitizer (chlorine) becomes ineffective (it does not but that’s an argument for another day). So it basically shuts off the chlorination system. You need to manually get the pH below 7.8 and then reset the system.

This is just another silly “safety feature” built into the Pentair dosing systems. The logic that sanitizer becomes less effective with higher pH is only true when no CYA is present. When CYA is present, the changes in active chlorine concentration with pH are much, much smaller. They’ve simply built incorrect understanding into their “intelligent” systems

This is why TFP dies not endorse using these probe-based automated chemical dosing systems.[17] They are expensive, overly complicated and they manufacturers don’t understand the chemistry very well and so they put in silly lockout features like you’re seeing. They are simply more trouble than they are worth.

Injector valve failure

IntelliChem Melted Check Valve.jpg

There was a bad batch of plastic that was in circulation, melted and dumped acid everywhere. They only melted at the top and not inside.[18]

From Pentair:

If you have purchased the following Pentair Intellichem items since March 1st, 2019, we are contacting you to because they may contain a faulty injection check valve prone to melting.[19]

  • 522621 - Controller and Acid Tank with Tank Mounted Pump
  • 522622 - Controller and Acid and Chlorine Tanks with Tank Mounted Pump
  • 522577 - IntelliChem Commercial System 1 Pump
  • 522578 - IntelliChem Commercial System - 2 pumps

A replacement check valve, part number 522513Z, is now available for these items, which we can send to you at no charge.

Flow Switch

The IntelliChem uses Pentair 754000440 Intellichem Flow Switch With Magnet.

The magnet is loose and can get lost when the system is winterized.

No chlorine generation when pump on higher speed

Issue was leaking valve on suction side, causing air bubbles at ORP / pH sensing cell. Pentair's design seems to be sensitive to entrained air.[20]

Understanding ORP

The thing to understand about ORP is that the voltage detected by the probe is affected by every chemical species in the water. Some of those chemical levels change slowly with time while others can change on an hourly or daily basis. Even certain chloramines can affect ORP levels. So it’s not unsurprising to see diurnal changes in ORP. Have you done an OCLT to determine if something isn’t growing in your water? Overnight loss of chlorine should be less than 1ppm and if it is more than that, then you’re battling two problems at once.[21]

The question to answer is this - what does the ORP signal even mean in swimming pool water?

Sure, the ORP correlates to the FC level, but it is not exact. There have been many studies that have shown ORP probes showing a signal level of >750 mV but the solution only has minimal amounts of FC in it. Then other solutions that show ORP signals less than 700mV with high levels of FC. These variations happen between different probe manufacturers and even within the same line of ORP probes. So, in order for you to specifically know what your system is even doing, you have to map out the correlation of FC to ORP signal over a short period of time (how they vary within a given day) as well as the long term trend. Then you might actually have the ability to know with some certainty what your pool water is doing. While it is generally accepted that an water sample with an ORP signal >700mV is considered “sanitizing” that is only true under very carefully controlled circumstances and, in particular, when a strong oxidizer buffer like CYA is not present.

How To Disassociate Intellichlor & Intellichem

If you have the IntelliChem and want to separately take control of the acid and chlorine then:[22]

Easytouch with ScreenLogic

  1. Set the ORP hardware setting in the Intelllichem configuration menu to NONE. (Important, must be done on the device)
  2. Deselect the Intellichem from the ScreenLogic configuration menu (page 3/5).

Now you have direct control over the IntelliChlor from ScreenLogic, but you can't view or control the IntelliChem.

If you set the Chlorinator to the % value you like, lets say 60% and then return to the ScreenLogic configuration menu and recheck the box for 'IntelliChem present', you can now control the IntelliChem via ScreenLodic, and while you loose control of the chlorinator, the chlorinator retains its previous setting no matter what the Intellichem thinks the ORP is, the SWCG stays at the 60% you set directly.

Now when you want to control the SWCG, you deselect the 'Intellichem present' from the ScreenLogic configuration menu, make any adjustments you like to the SWCG, and then recheck the box for IntelliChem present to view the probe values and manipulate the IntelliChem.

ScreenLogic will still show "IntellliChem in Control" on your Chlorinator page when its check box is selected, but no commands are sent to the cell, and your chlorine production is not affected.

IntelliCenter

  1. Disconnect/Remove ORP probe, replace with PVC pipe/cap (1/2” x 4” PVC riser, 1/2” PVC cap FPT)[23]
  2. Set the ORP hardware in the IntellliChem to NONE. Menu: configuration —> hardware —> ORP Control
  3. Set the ORP set point to 400 (lowest possible), the low alarm to 350 (lowest possible) and high alarm to 900 (highest possible). Only so that IntelliChem shows ORP OK most of the time (no other functional value that I'm aware of).
  4. On the IntelliCenter2 App add the IntelliChlor as a second controller under settings —> chemistry control, and deselect all the ORP notifications under settings —> general —> Notifications —> IntelliChem
  5. Test the IntelliChlor percentage adjustments via App.
