Why don't they make straight chlorine tablets?

Chlorine is a gas. You must bind it with something. The least invasive item is water - which makes bleach.

Yes, but they have calcium in them so you get a calcium buildup instead. They are also more costly. But as a gas chlorine has to be bound to something to remain a solid.

And to the person who says pure chlorine tablets would be a million dollar idea (someone always says it when this question is asked), I say it will be a multi-trillion dollar idea. For that person will have found a way to turn a gas in to a solid at normal Earth temperatures and pressures, but also able to return to its natural state easily. The pure chlorine pucks will be nice, but the solid hydrogen cubes our cars will run on will be even nicer! And I can't wait to see the rockets that run on solid hydrogen and oxygen! The greatest thing since sliced bread will be sliced hydrogen! :p

(Just having a little fun. It isn't a stupid question, just one that gets asked fairly often.)

Chlorine in gaseous form would be extremely dangerous, as it is toxic. I'd much rather deal with a liquid where the worst I might suffer is white spots on my clothing.

Yeah, I don't think there are gas injections systems available for the residential market. Given the situation that would arise from a tank leak in a neighborhood setting I'm guessing many laws are in place preventing residential use of such a system.

Isn't a SWCG essentially a gas injection system?
No, an SWG is a chlorine production system that can produce about a pound or two of chlorine a day. A gas injection system would involve handling, transporting, and storing cylinders that hold upwards of 100 lbs of chlorine gas. A neighborhood would not require evacuation due to an SWG malfunction.

I've always assumed you can't just buy tanks of chlorine for home use. Never looked into it but found the quote below on a pool site. I have a few neighbors with pools and when I see how they work with the "safer" pool chemicals I'm glad they don't have access to tanks of chlorine.

Pure gas chlorine can only be used by specially qualified service firms who maintain an EPA registration for their product, and an EPA license on their repackaging facilities. Gas chlorine cannot be purchased "over-the counter" by either pool owners or non-qualified pool services.

Bleach enclosed in a slowly dissolving substance would be nice, like dishwashing tablets, medication etc. But I guess the by product wouldn't be very nice for pool water. (I'm no chemist either.)

Interesting idea. Could have like a dis-solvable multi-layer shell, with Cl trapped in between each layer, like baklava. Drop it in a dispenser like for pucks. As each layer dissolves, it releases it's portion of Cl. But you would have to have tight control on the dissolution rate of each layer...
