Which PB to choose? Concrete Wall vs. Steel Wall and equiptment

Hi Everyone-

I have narrowed down my PB to 2 companies. I haven't signed or started anything yet. I am located in Nassau County, NY. Approx 11,300 Gallons.

Company 1- 13X26 In ground Steel Walled pool, Vinyl Liner of Choice, Built in Steps Full Width of Pool, Poolcrete, Underwater LED light change color, Cartridge Filter System, Heater, Salt Water System, Total Cost - $30,000

Company 2 - 13x26 In Ground Concrete Walled Pool, Vinyl Liner, Builtin Steps Full Length of Pool, Bench in deep section, Vermiculite, 2 Automatic Skimmers, 4 return Jets, and 2 main drains, One Jandy 1 1/2 HP Filter Pump, One Jandy DE 48 filter and 2” multiport One Jandy JXi gas heater, 400,000 BTU and electronic ignition, One Jandy Aquapure salt water chlorine generator, One Jandy RS8 automated control system with internet control and cover link to control chlorine production when cover closed.
Two Pool Lights to be LED energy saving and color changing., One Aquaclean robotic pool cleaner, One Stainless Steel Handrail for Steps
Maintenance kit, start up chemicals, start up of pool and demonstration of all equipment is included. Total $42,200

One is must more detailed because Company 2 is the actual PB and sub out masonry. Company 1 is utilized by the design team on tons of projects so that quote is from my Landscape/Mason Contractor whom he does tons of pools for.

Are there any pro/cons to either or am I fine either way as long as the PB is competent? I'm trying to get more specifics for Company 1 now but I know they use Hayward products. Thanks!!

HI! Looks like you have a good handle on what you want design wise. We do need more details to make an informed decision. Let us know as soon as you get them.

Same decision here. About to make a final choice and leaning towards steel wall (galvanized). Builder seems to have better build quality, better/more options, will work with me more. Also, if salt is a big factor, concrete will wear away and crack/chip from salt as well... So not a huge difference from steel walls eventually rusting.

I am actually leaning toward concrete. 10” thick concrete wallsthat are then reinforced with steel rebar. Salt should never touch the wall with the liner though correct? About 6 other people in my area have used the concrete walls and been very happy. I don't mind paying a little more if I am happy.

Ahhhh but never say never LOL There are + and -for both. Pick the one you are most comfortable with and the builder you click with the best. You will be spending a lot of time with him and his crew.

So it looks like we are choosing the concrete wall builder. Felt his quality and reviews were top notch and I have seen his work in 3 other pools within 1/2 mile of my house. 10"wide poured concrete walls. 14x26 vinyl liner pool with vermiculite bottom with Ben h in deep end and built in steps 14' wide. Pool will have 2 automatic skimmers 4 return jets and 2 main drains. Pool plumbed with2" pvc pipe. 6x6' drywell installed. Automatic pool cover with aluminum track channel, concrete box to conceal mechanism remote lock and key control switch. Stainless steel brackets installed in box for a walk on lid. Jandy 1 1/2 HP Filter pump, Jandy DE 48" filter and 2" multi port, Jandy JXi gas heater, 400000 BTU and electronic ignition, Jandy Aquapure SWCG, Jandy RS8 automated control with internet control and cover link, 2 pool lights to be LED and color changing. $52200.

Any my thoughts on if all this is needed? Not sure if RS8 system is needed but I love the convenience. Any thing I'm missing here as well. We're planning on doing a 1400 sq. Foot patio as well with built in BBQ and fire pit. He is pouring a concrete base for that. Any pitfalls I should watch out for? Thx in advance.

Choosing a pool builder is a Tough decision. Make sure to check the reviews from the BBB.org, yelp or yellowpages before deciding to work with a company. Here is an article where you can find some tips how to jump into swimming pool design. Jumping Into Swimming Pool Design

The only thing I see "missing" is the pump-model please. Make sure it is two speed. That will help with your power bills.

Now take and share where this wonderful pool is going! Does he have a start date?

These guys are well known and he is was recommended by other pool suppliers as well. Owner is Director of Long Island pool and spa organization. Only good things have been said. 25 reviews on Angie's List of An A rating.
I am 99% sure it's a 2 speed or variable speed. I will get model # today. I'm signing contract today. I need a ton of permits. We are in no rush as summer is here already. Likely start date will be in September which gives me more time for specifics on lighting, pavers, fencing, and other details to decide on. I will be posting pics once the project is started.

You and Lance are welcome to share PB names and info through Private Messaging. If things were to go south with a builder, a bad game of bashing between pool owner and pool builder could begin and get out of hand. We try to keep the posts out of the combat zone. Lol!!

I hope you begin your pool build thread! We love helping you save money on the boring stuff like equipment you don't really need , PB self promoting money makers, etc. Then... we'll help you spend that money you saved on the fun things like a water feature, more decking, upgraded tile!
