It's been quite a few years since we've replaced the sand in our filter & last year the water seemed not as clear so think it's about time to replace it but can't remember what type of sand we used. Is Zeobrite any good?
Zeo is good some on here love it others not so much. I used #20 grade silica sand that is pretty much the stander on it. Also some add a couple cups of DE to the top of there sand to help a little bit. But i don't. But to see if you even need to replace your sand take the top off and see if its got clumps that will not break up, if is just dirty and has channels you probably just need to clean the sand.
Your sand was a couple million years old when you added it, so I doubt a couple years in the filter wore it out.
What can happen is that it cakes and clumps and when you backwash, it breaks up into big clods. Then you get big crevasses where water can flow through without being filtered. Break up the clumps and it'll go back to normal. The only reason to replace the sand is if it has turned into a gooey mess from bacquacil or some kind of snake oil the pool store sold you. Otherwise, a deep cleaning should be all you need. Deep Cleaning a Sand Filter
