We're looking to potentially add a heater to our ~25k gallon vinyl-lined pool in NE MO. Essentially, we're wanting to see if we can extend the swim season about a month on both ends of summer and maybe provide for a surprise swim opportunity in the winter.

It wouldn't be difficult to get gas plumbed where the pool equipment is at.

Utility costs for us as our last bill:
Gas 102 units (CCF) - $136.26
Electricity is $0.09572 / kWh

Your gas cost is $1.33 per cubic foot. That means a gas heater will use $1.33 per hour per 100K btu.

A 400K heater (which is what you really want, don't go smaller unless the gas line won't support it) will cost right at $5.10 per hour of use. You will get a temperature rise of a little over 1.5 degrees per hour of use with a 400K heater.

After reconsidering, our pool will be winterized, so there won't be any off season swimming. Hoping to just extend the season by a few weeks and make it more comfortable the rest of the time. Does gas still make sense assuming we can get a line installed at the pad?

Pentair's calculator doesn't seem to be working. Raypak's seems to say electric will be quite a bit cheaper - $900 vs $2400 May - October

A 400K gas heater is guaranteed to heat your pool whenever you want. Having a pool cover and heating on demand will reduce the gas cost since that estimator assumes the heater will maintain a water temperature. Which is not necessary with a gas heater.

Compare your complete costs of heater+gas line or gas or 50-60 amp electric for HP. What the less expensive gas heater saves you can be put towards the gas cost.

What is your starting temp? To what temp do you want to heat? Cost would be about $5.30 per hour with a 400K BTU unit to get there for your pool in Missouri.
