What is the grey powder like stuff at the bottom of my pool?

I am comparing my reading from yesterday 6pm and test 1pm today. There is not a lot of sun here today. I lost 7 ppm FC over night.

Today
FC 8 (was 15)
CC 0
PH 7.5 (was 7.8)
Alkalinity 160 ( same)
Calcium hardness 320 Using suggested method because of metal in water, without this method it’s 450 (was 500 first time using the kit)
Cya 60 tested a few time to make sure(was 70 Again my first time using the kit, maybe user error)

I guess these result telling me I need a SLAM because I am losing FC too much. It’s telling me I have algae. The powder is probably algae. Water is clear and no CC.

Did you count the original drops?

When doing the modified test vs the regular test, is there a better endpoint transition?
Yes I did count it. I added 5 drop in the beginning, adding 27 drops at the end. That’s how I got the result. Many time at 22 drops it turn blue and then pink again in a few seconds, and up to 27 drops it doesn’t turn pink anymore.
it was 450 before this method. Now 320 with this method.

Merged threads. TFP Mod.

I just bought my TF 100 kit and I think I might have some user errors...

Last night my result was

FC 15
CC 0
PH 7.8
TA 160
CH 450 (using a different method suspecting metal interference the result was 320)

So after extreme high CH in my vinyl pool I added sequestering compound to my pool.

This morning my FC dropped to 8, so I thought I have some problem with losing my FC so fast, but I tested through out the day and it remained at 8. It’s a cloudy day and rained.

FC 8
CC 0.5
PH 7.5
TA 160
CH 100 (from 450? I added a bag of sequestering compound last night. This morning I fill the water up by 1 inch. It was very hot the last two days. Then it rained. I tested after the rain. Also using the metal interference method, the result was 250 this time. ???)

I know it rained and dropped the PH and TA a little, but is it possible that from me filling the water, rain water and sequestering compound lower my CH that much? I tested more than 3 times to make sure and it kept coming back to 100. HELP🤔

It’s raining a lot where I am now and will rain the next few days. Maybe I don’t need muriatic acid to lower the PH and TA to start The Slam process. Will check it in a few days.

Hi @JamesW
I played around with the TF 100 test kit and using the original method I got CH 100... and using the method you suggested for metal interference I got CH 250 this evening.
Last night I asked sequestering compound. This morning I filled 1 inch of water and rain water. Now result these result. Is it even possible?

I run my filter all night. And the result this morning 6am

FC 8 (9 last night)
CC 0.5
PH 7.5
TA 150
CH 200 ( I don’t know what is casing the CH going up and down... maybe user error with the test)
CYA 60

Seems like I am in good shape?
My neighbor had a pool guy opening the pool this morning, and I asked the guy to take a look at what is the grey powder. He told me mostly likely DE and want me to open up the filter to check.

I told him I backwashed twice the first time I put the full amount DE 4lbs. And learned that I should only put 3lbs. The second time I put 3 lbs. I think most likely I did this causing it to have DE come out.
