What did you do to your pool today?

Ever have one of those days where you feel like an idiot? If you scroll up, you'll see where I posted a few days ago about the 3/4" gas line feeding my pool equipment pad. I was getting ready to buy all new 1.25" polyethylene gas line, rent a trencher, and get to work. Even had the 811 guys come out and mark lines. Then I noticed that the gas inlet on the new heater is 3/4". Well that's interesting. Then I saw a YouTube video where they were running new gas line and noticed that yep, it is indeed 1.25" where it comes out of the ground, but then gets necked down to 3/4" for all the pool heater fittings. That got the gears in my head turning..

The pipe coming out of the ground that's visible is certainly 3/4", but I went and got a hand shovel and dug out around the pipe, and what do you know.. big 1.25" gas line just under the soil running back to the meter.

Sure wish I would have figured that out earlier
And now you know.

I removed my Polaris 280 cleaner for its check up. Added new tires, added new wear rings on tail, added new scrubber on tail, cleaned the 2 inline filters, checked the hoses and float positions. Ready to pick up all that pollen and debris falling into my pool!!!!!! What a mess that pollen makes. Had to wash off the patio furniture as well.

We hit 100 degrees on Friday so that gave me all the motivation i needed to finally put this pool up. Coincidentally, tree trimming just moved up on the list 😁

I would appreciate some of that hot weather please!!! I wanna go swimming!!!

I checked my pool today. Put in more old liquid chlorine, added a little more baking soda to inch up on my target. Added 2 more lbs of CYA and hooked up my automatic cleaner (Carlos) to pick up a thousand worms. A few pics from today... I really love the Storm Grey pool finish!!!

I got the new heater delivered on Friday. It was a LOT bigger than I expected.. lol. Hauled that thing myself from my driveway through the backyard to the equipment pad using a hand truck. I would have rented an appliance dolly, but there's no way those wheels would have made it over the pea gravel we have between the driveway and back yard. Got it unboxed and sitting on the pad Friday night.

Saturday was my self-paced crash course for plumbing in gas, as well as working with PVC. Hadn't done either before, and I didn't even own any pipe wrenches haha. Shockingly, the gas line was way easier for me, which I didn't expect. The PVC.. total nightmare. Beginning to end. The last owners had a pool builder come out and rip the old heater out when it rusted through. They made a janky loop to bypass where the heater would have been and ripped out EVERYTHING (electrical, automation wires, bonding wire, etc.). They also left me very little excess pipe to play with coming off the Jandy backwash valve, which sucked. I tried to do it the right way.. went out and got a Jandy 3-way valve and a check valve so I could bypass the heater if need be. I got almost to the end and massively messed up, the 3-way wouldn't line up with the return side and I couldn't get it together before the cement set. Result: ruined brand new 3-way. I guess at least I can save it for the o-rings and diverter.

I finally gave up halfway through the day today and just blocked off the tee in the return side and plumbed it straight so I could get the pool operating again. When I cut the pipes Saturday morning, the filter contents and everything ended up backwashing into the pool and made an enormous mess, so I wanted to get that working again ASAP. Managed to only end up with 1 leak, an occasional drip out of the pipe connected to the backwash valve where I had very little old pipe to fuse onto. Plumbing water is NOT my strong suit, I've learned. I didn't expect the stuff to set so fast the first time around, so I learned my lesson and when I plumbed it more directly I marked everything a million times when I dry fit it all. If I get a wild hare to upgrade to a variable speed pump this year, I'll re-do all the plumbing and get rid of that horrible Jandy slide-style backwash valve. I HATE that thing. The leak needs to be fixed regardless but that's a project for another weekend.

Hooked up the electrical this evening, said screw it on the automation for now, and turned it on manually. It was wild seeing everything actually work. Spa went from 70 to 104 in about ~45 minutes. I realize that heated pools and spas aren't much of a novelty around these parts, but for me, I really can't believe I have something THAT nice. I didn't have much growing up (but I am now very thankful for what I DID have), and to have a house of my own with my own freaking pool and hot tub kind of blew my mind for a second there. Honestly a little emotional.. lol. The better half and I spent a while in the spa relaxing this evening, which is the first time I've done that all weekend.

I never wanted a pool before, and especially nothing as complex as what we have here, but man am I thankful for it now.

We grew up poor. Dad worked his beach balls off at the steel mill. He did what he could to provide. Although money wasn't prolific... the love he gave was and it was more than I needed. I wish he could see all i have n what I've been through to get it. Enjoy your pool and all you have. And congratulations on plumbing n gas lines. You passed.

It's because the beer was 37 degrees and the pool helped warm you up. ;)

It's also why the salt feel and eye irratation is a thing. You are 7k -9k ppm salt and your eyes are a PH in the low 7s. The closer you get to either #, the more comfortable it is.

Just tested n logged my pool results. Not sure why there are a couple things out of range? I'm just getting used to this new calculator. I hooked Carlos back up. I got a couple days of freedom. I want to look into getting my solar reel together and keep my blanket on at night n roll it up at 0400 before work. We'll see how long that lasts... 😆

West Texas gets some terrible winds, I can't imagine what that's like trying to keep clean! I spent a lot of time out in Midland and I think having a pool out there would have driven me nuts lol

Holy cow what a view! Do you have problems with dust and dirt when the wind picks up? I would think that happens often given all the windmills!
Absolutely. But, I’m thankful for my in-floor system. If I boost the pump rpm and brush it, it clears up quickly. I also clean my filters more often just to knock out that fine blow dirt.

I know a lot of folks complaining about leaves and pollen. So we all have our OCD struggles. Lol

Oh and funny you ask, because it’s gusting to 40mph as we speak🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m in my trunks, but ain’t getting in. The kids could care less

It’s not too bad. In floor system and keeping dust down around the house helps. Cool thing about the dust, it doesn’t clog your skimmers. So I can crank up the rpm’s and the floor system kicks up the dirt and it cleans pretty quickly

Oh and Midland is a terrible place

Proud of myself. I got my solar reel put together with a beer n chocolate chip cookies close by. I didn't drop the F Bomb til I got to the self tapping screws. I'm going to lay the solar blanket on the pool tomorrow and trim it and then attach it to the reel straps. I may even take a trip to Lowes n buy a couple big patio stones to move the solar reel back into the "future" mulched bed to get it off the concrete because I know my little one is going to be all over the decking trying to find the coolest spot to jump into the deep end. Not to bad for a couple hundred dollars. Feels pretty sturdy.

Here is 40mph gust for about 6hr straight. It’ll clean up in a few hours. It’s all fine dirt and moves quickly
