What could cause this calcium buildup on the exterior of my pool?

This is fantastic information, thank you both. Fortunately no cracks on the interior of the pool, nothing that has gone completely through the gunnite and plaster in the interior. The only crack that I see is a straight line that wraps around the hot tub, which is still concerning to me, but I have had two inspectors look at it and say that it is not an issue (and I am having another come tomorrow), although if you have any concerns I am all ears.

(the black lines are a reflection from telephone lines - this confused the heck out of me at first!).

I will use this information to find the correct engineer for the job.

I would only be concerned about the line int he hot tub if your found it was leaking water.

To me it looks like something scratched the plaster while trying to clean the tub.
