I only have a basic catch bag and it can not filter things like dead algae at the bottom of the pool as it just gets agitated and sent back into the pool. Outside of spending $30 on a multi layer filter bag, is there any DIY method that will work?

Get in the pool and create a swirl. Let the solids settle to the middle. Then use a siphon to vac the material to the grass, etc.
