I have a Hayward sand filter. After a hard rain I needed to waste some water. I backwashed first, then rinsed, then wasted some water. When I set it back to filter and turned on the pump water shot out from around the valve. What is happening? What did I do wrong? How do fix this?

Be sure all the screws/bolts are tight (don't use a power screwdriver). If that doesn't stop the leak you may need a new O ring under the valve top.

So long as you turned the pump off before moving the valve handle you didn’t do anything wrong.
What is the model of the mpv /filter?
