Water level for closing

I've read about not taking water out of pool when it's raining and understand that.
What about for winter shutdown, is it ok to drain a bit so it doesn't get too high and get behind the liner?
The cover is solid enough that not too much water gets in the pool, but of course some does.
I'm thinking lower level enough to around the bottom 1/4 of the skimmer?
It's never gotten completely full in the few years I've been here, but it gets near the top by spring, and I'm pretty sure there's no overflow.
Thanks.

Salt, vinyl ~23k gallons.

To better answer your question, we need to know more about your pool and set up. That makes a huge difference in water level prep at closing. Please update your signature. See mine as an example. Also consider posting a pic or two of your pool. There's also going to be a special live zoom meeting about winter closing today on TFP if you're interested.

I added a couple of pictures and some pool info.

I was able to join for a couple of minutes. I think my cover would count as a safety cover since it has springs and strapping from side to side. I'm not sure I would call it mesh, and it feels more like canvas to me.
Best I can tell from the call is lower it some, if you wish, but good to have the water high enough to support cover if snowed on?
