Hello,

I had my pool installed in May and have had to add water a number of times throughout the summer due to evaporation. The month of September I feel like I am adding more water than ever. I estimate I lost about an inch of water in the last 4 days. I have the heater set on a base level of 76 degrees but the temps have been dropping into the 50s at night here in the northeast. Is it possible that this much water is evaporating? Or could it be something much worse like a leak? This is the first year I had my pool so I’m not sure what to expect this time of year.

The company that installed my pool told me to put a little plastic container on the step and add water to the same height as the pool and watch to see if they lose water at the same rate over the course of a couple of days. However, it is supposed to rain on and off the next few days and then they are coming to close the pool on Monday.

I’m just nervous to close the pool if there is in fact a leak. Is it possible that I can be losing this much water to evaporation? Am I over thinking this and should I just have them close the pool on Monday as planned? Or should I hold off on closing the pool?

Thanks!

Sounds like normal evaporation with warm water and cold nights. You need to use a pool cover if you intend to run your pool with the heater on during cooler weather.

Evaporation rate in your area, like most, is 1/4" per day. So, an inch in 4 days is normal. If you have a North wind, which is usually a very dry wind, it could be an inch a day. I've seen that in my pool.

Thank you!

I'm in Pa and I lost a ton of water this season. I don't have an auto filler and I had the hose in many times. I thought I had a leak as well, but I believe this was the lowest rainfall since we built the pool.
