Water Lab Results / Newbie Questions!

Put in 900 grams of cya this morn which should raise it by 16 which should be good for Toronto weather.

Btw.. Just to confirm, the K-2006C kit does not have salt testing reagents? Mine did not even though the instructions on how to test salt was on the sticker which I found odd.

So tested this morn. My cya is around 50 which makes sense.

Weird thing is my FC seems to have increases now to 20 or 22 from 14?

Is that possible without adding anything other than stabilizer to water?

Also, someone mentioned above using one scoop of 870 to the 10ml water. I still use 2 scoops since that is what is reccod in the test.

When it says keep adding 871 until the water becomes clear... Is it supposed to be perfectly clear? Ie absolutely not even the slightest tinge of pink?

Feel like I'm doing something incorrectly!

Tested FC yesterday and it was 22, today (24 hrs later) and it is 24.

Turned my chlorinator down to 20% yesterday and pump is only on from 7pm to 11am daily, also at 30%.

Couple things:

1. Should I set chlorination to off until FC comes down to say 5 or 6?

2. Is a constant FC of north or 20 a concern?

Combined CC at least seems to be zero now.

I would suggest lowering your pump run time. Try 7 pm to 3 am or whatever timing you like. As Canada is now out of summer and fast approaching winter (Ha!) your FC needs are dropping rapidly.

With a CYA of 50 you should not have a FC greater than 20 ppm if possible.

Just bumping, any risk to turning off the chlorinator function for a day or two to see if it helps allow reduction in the FC in the pool?

You can turn it off. Test FC each day and turn it on when you hit 8 ppm FC or so.

Maybe I have an overactive chlorinator, even at 30% as I turned it off a few days, measured around 10 and turned the chlorinator back on to 30% (filter runs from 7pm to 11am daily at 30%), and chlorine this morning was back up to 18. I do use a coverastar safety cover at all times and so there is little sun hitting the water so likely lower FC loss as a result. Going to turn it back off for now.

As for the testing, just to confirm, with 10ml of water it's okay to use one scoop/dipper of 870 vs 2? Instructions say 2 dippers for 10ml or 25ml (which seems odd to me in the first place), but wanted to confirm.

Really depleting my 871 having to use ~30 to 40 drops to check FC! Good thing winter is around the corner...yeah...umm...good thing. Hopefully I can just buy specific reagents online and send to my parents when they head south to florida for the winter so they can bring some back.

I also have a safety cover on our pool which is very close to your pool size. I have found that I settle on around 20-25% with 7 hours of run time in the peak of summer. When our water temps get up to 90° or so I have to bump it up to 28-30%. However, in the early spring and late fall I can run at 4-5 hours at around 25% and be fine.

I have a Jandy 1400 cell which is a bit larger in chlorine output to yours (1.25lbs per day for the Jandy vs .70lbs per day for your Hayward T9). With that in mind I would look at lowering your pump run time to something closer to 8 hours and then adjust your % down further as needed - keeping in mind that your chlorine demand will be dropping over the next few months as the weather cools.

Right now you are running at 16 hours and 30%, so that is putting in a lot of chlorine into your water, especially for a covered pool. Seeing the CC (combined chlorine) with a cover on the pool for long periods of time isn't unusual. There is no sun to burn it off like all other outdoor pools. If you can open it for a few hours before testing, and also open it a couple of times a week to let it breath you will likely not see CC if you keep your other numbers inline like you are.
