Waste Drain line

Hey all, first time pool owner with our new home. it’s an inground with a Hayward Sand filter set up. Question I have is, our waste line has an open/close valve on it that stays open all the time. However when the wife goes to do the backwash on the filter, the waste line runs into the ground and we see no signs of an exit anywhere.. no wet spots in the yard. No water pooling anywhere etc. is this common? And should the waste line valve be opened or closed when not on the backwash setting?

Thank you! IMG_0232.jpeg

Welcome to TFP.

We cannot tell you where your waste line runs to. It may run to an underground pit or a sewer line.

A valve on the MPV waste line is often installed to fix a leaking MPV spider gasket problem where water is draining out the waste line when in FILTER position.

If your MPV is working correctly there should be no need tor the waste line valve or it to be closed.

Thanks for the reply. As stated this is our first pool I kind of figured it went into the sewer but can only assume. One thing I did notice last night went I moved the level to the backwash position, turned the pump on I’m getting a steady 10-12psi reading on the gauge but my understand is there shouldn’t be any pressure, is that correct?

You should have a clear PVC sight glass in the backwash line so that you can see if backwash water is flowing. Then we will see if water is flowing freely out the pipe.
