Warning About Walmart Liquid Chlorine

You are quite right kim! Having worked for a year at a Walmart after retiring the back is the backroom or storage that is in the rear of the building, all climate controlled. The only stuff they usually ever keep outside is home & garden items.
Walmart will use containers but most of the time that is at Christmas time. I THINK when they say "in the back" they mean inside the building and it has AC and cover.

The pool esentials I get is in a bleach type of solid white bottle. I have seen the ones in the clear jugs but they were in a box of four. I bought them once because it was a small savings and they seemed fine.

The cya thing is interesting for sure. Sounds like you have a smart daughter! I found I was loosing cya too. But I think it's mostly from a leak. I've read that cya doesn't leave the water even if you do have tons of rain.

Popcorn, the "process" Z is telling you do is what will answer your daughters thoughts! Please work on that now so we can see what it what with your pool and get you straightened out and looking like we all know it can!

Yes, that is why I suggested the procedure of adding 10ppm then testing in 15 minutes. If bacteria did consume the CYA, the by-product is ammonia, which takes a lot of chlorine to consume, and it depletes chlorine very quickly. If you add more CYA before you get rid of the ammonia, you basically feed the bacteria and the ammonia conversion continues. You kill off the bacteria while oxidizing the ammonia with chlorine, so once the majority of chlorine holds after 15 minutes, you are good to add CYA.

We usually don't mention CYA conversion up front because it is quite rare, and people tend to freak out when you mention they may have ammonia in their pool. The process to get rid of it is the same as a slam, you just have to do those quick 15 minute dosing cycles to get rid of the ammonia up front.

I have added the chlorine and have about 5 minutes more before I test. I wish I had read your earlier post (or talked to my daughter) before I added cya (I sort of panicked and added it right after I saw 3 tests read 0 cya and before I posted about it here). I will post again after I have reached 10ppm chlorine and it's holding. I guess I'll have to wait and see on the cya. Unfortunately, I'd already added 4 pounds of it. :(

And thank you again for all the help! I really appreciate it!

I had a UFR (unplanned fecal release) in the pool this weekend with a 2 year old. Immediately dumped the bleach on hand into the pool and headed to Wal Mart for more. They had a whole end full of the 10% pool chlorinating liquid on display. I checked date codes, some of it was from September of 2016 and some was from April of 2017. Guess which ones I grabbed ? Bottles were the same, and if you didn't know how to decipher date codes, it would be a total guess.

Thanks for the knowledge, TPF. Pool is fine now- OCLT is 0.

Popcorn girl, I hope you get your problem straightened out. Wish I could help, but you already got people a lot smarter about this stuff than me on your team.

I have been dumping the walmart purchased liquid chlorine for the past week wondering why my FC levels are near zero.
I took a whif of a new gallon of it today and could barely smell anything. I guess I'm not going back there to buy it.

My date codes are 2017 and 144 so pretty recently produced. (I just checked the last 3 bottles. 1 new and 2 empty and none smelled like chlorine)

PopcornGirl2 --

You have a sand filter. How have you been adding all the CYA you have been mentioning? If you are pouring it into the skimmer, a good portion could be in the low flow areas of the sand filter and/or flushed out when you backwashed.

Be sure to use the sock method when you add CYA. It is explained in the CYA section of Pool School.

Take care

I made the mistake of grabbing a case of 10% at Rural King (25 miles away) without checking the date. Had to use twice as much. Noticed at our Walmart, the box with 2 jugs of chlorine was cheaper than buying individually, but they were 3 months older. I paid the extra for the individual, as I was in the middle of a SLAM.

I'm curious to see what happens with the CYA you added.

Thank you @mknauss -- No worries; I know better than to add it all to the skimmer at once. I learned that lesson several years ago and from reading this site. :) I have learned so much from this forum and the PoolSchool, I can't even tell you! Very grateful for all the help I've received.

Yep; my experience exactly! I tried contacting Walmart Corporate about it, but they didn't seem to care. :( My local store manager was very kind and listened to me, and they issued me a refund for the 4 bottles I returned, but I don't know if he fully understood what I was telling him. Maybe if enough people contact Walmart, they'll get the message.

Hmmm... I've been using it all season. The two pack boxes with the milk jug containers. Very little smell, but fc hits target. Made january '17

Oh, I have no doubt some of it is good... I was using it the first 5 weeks my pool was open and it was great! But something has either happened at my store (in the way they're storing it?) or with the distributor. Not all of the product is bad. When I first started using it, it was great, but therein lies the problem... I started trusting it to be great and (apparently) was pouring very expensive gallons of water into my pool the past several weeks!

I want to make sure I read the post with the picture correct. Your FC held at 10 for how long?

If it held for longer than 15 mins then you are good to go with the SLAM! Good job brushing. Have to break up the film over the algae and get up where the FC can get to it good.

How sad that there is not better quality control or even caring that this happened. You know what? I think this MIGHT be a good place for test strips! just to dip in and make sure it IS chlorine instead of just water. I guess the drop FC test would be better though to show there is chlorine.

 here is to getting your pretty pool clear again!

Yep, it held after 15 minutes. I also checked it again at 11:00 PM last night and again this morning and my FC is still holding at 10 ppm! YAY! I only hope I haven't messed up by adding cya first. If I end up in an overstabilization scenario, I will just drain some and refill. But since we have a tropical storm headed right for us, maybe it will keep things from getting out of hand. I'm keeping a close eye on my pH and calcium, too, since the FC is high. Should I be concerned that my cya is already registering at 35? I know it can take up to a week to peak.
Great idea on the test strips! LOL... IF I ever buy from Walmart again. I bought the refillable containers from Pinch-a-Penny Pool and Spa yesterday and can get them refilled with liquid chlorine (10.5%) for about the same price that Walmart was selling theirs. And I don't have the hassle of rinsing/crushing/recycling the jugs. :)
Pool is already looking MUCH better!

This rain system we are both dealing with will "help" if you have too much CYA!

We did a lot of experimenting last summer with the CYA. We found that as soon as the CYA was all dissolved AND the pump has had a chance to mix it into the water good (all day or over night) that you could test and call the testing good. It might ease up a tiny bit but you should not see a big jump.

I am SO glad the pool is already showing the work you are putting into it! I get my chlorine in those same jugs! LOVE them! I get mine at our local Ace Hardware.
