Vowing to never visit Leslie's again! Help with Chlorine Levels needed :)

Hello there! I'm new to TFP and have purchased a Taylor 2006 kit at Leslie's. For the last 3 years, the manager at our local Leslie's makes my blood boil. He is condescending and every time I leave the store I am upset at one or another comment he has made. I have vowed to never go there again. Anyway, My FC is 10 - TC 10 - Ph 8 - TA 140 - and my CYA is 40 - Salt is 3000ppm and my chlorinator is set to 70%. I am not too concerned with the CYA since my chlorine is high. I took my test on Sunday to Leslie's (left angry) and have added the M Acid and Baking Soda as well as Fresh and Clear and Chlor-Neutralizer to no avail.

Any ideas why my chlorine is still so high? This is never a problem, it's almost always on the lower side. Thanks!!

Welcome to TFP!

Just stay away from the pool store in general.
You have your own test kit. Believe its results.

With a TA of 140, there is no reason to add baking soda.
Let the TA come down to 60-70 and it will help stabilze your pH.

Siggest you read thru Pool Care Basics

I feel your pain!! It was also a pool store that lead me here to TFP! Their "free" test is not so free when you walk out of there with your arms full and wallet empty!!

I have something I want you to read. It shows you the CYA/FC ratio and the whys of it: FC/CYA Levels

When you see it you will see why your FC is not considered "too high". The more CYA you have the more FC you need.

@proavia gave you a good link to the basics. Look down at my signature to see the "recommended chemicals". You will find that almost all of the chemicals we use in our pools can be found at Wal-mart, Lowes, etc!! How neat is that???

You are right on the line where recommendations say that the pH test is inaccurate with high FC (10 is the usual mark). But given your current TA, what you have is not unexpected.
Unless you've added something else, your highish FC is just from having either the SWCG set a tad high - or you are running the pump for a little longer than you were. (One changes the other as far as Cl production).

Per the link above, you really aren't all that high. With a CYA of 30, you want to be at about 6. Far better, though, to build up your CYA to 60 or 70. Then your current FC will be very close to right on, and you'll avoid any risk of algae. You may even then be able to reduce the SWCG % a bit, as the CYA will help keep the FC level from burning off as quickly. Walmart is a reasonable source for Stabilizer (CYA).

Here's more about CYA - and using the sock method to add it: CYA - Further Reading

After that adjustment, as your TA reduces on its own, you'll just need periodic acid to keep the pH in the 7's. Less as the TA moves down.

No more trips to the pools store, ever! (Unless you need a part for something!)
