Why don't they just call it a shutoff? Doesn't seem like it diverts flow anywhere but just stops or starts flow... or am I overlooking something?

I guess it could be called that... most of the time it is used in conjunction with more than 1.. I am using 3 on the suction side and 7 on the pressure side.. So they will divert water from one to the other
