Baker II HR-30 question

My friend ended up with a Baker II HR-30 500lb sand filter. It's all new but I'm told sat around for a while unused and empty. He loaded it with 500 pounds of filter sand. I think HTH brand.

He's having a strange issue where the system works fine but the pressure shoots way up after 15 minutes or so and basically stops the flow. If he shuts the pump off for a minute and restarts the process starts all over again working fine at first.

Backwashing just gives clean water. He tried running it on recirculate and it doesn't appear to have the issue.

I don't get it? The only thing I can imagine is the multi port valve having an issue of some sort?

Do an overnight chlorine loss test to rule out algae/organics, even if the pool looks clear...Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
Post a full set of results. FC, CC, pH, TA, CH, CYA.
When the pressure rises, does the pressure drop through the returns coming into the pool?
If the pressure doesn't change to the returns, Does the gauge go to zero when pump is off? If you have a good gauge, you might swap and test...could be bad gauge.
Rule that out and we go to mechanical.
