Would laying a pad down on top of extruded polystyrene provide any advantage for an Intex Ultra XTR liner, or is it simply redundant?
Use pad in addition to foam?

Yes, the extruded polystyrene will go directly on top of a tarp against the ground. Was just wondering if a pad on top of the foam board would provide some nice cushion, or if it’d be negligible with the foam board there.
I put ours down directly onto the foam panels. If you have the tarp, go ahead and use. Won’t hurt anything.
Do you think gorilla pad or something of the sort would offer any improvement between the liner and the foam board?
Put it this way: I’ll be replacing this Intex probably next year and won’t worry about a gorilla pad.

In CT, I wanted a PAD. I ordered a PAD. I never got the PAD so, after leveling (commercial ground compactor) the ground (were within 1/2" of level), I put in about 1" of sand to fill in the divots, picked up 1" pink XPS from Home Depot, taped them together with Gorilla Patch & Seal tape, put the cheap Intex tarp over it and set up the pool. I am confident that nothing is going to grow through the XPS. This was not the original plan but with Covid, shipping and availability of the items I wanted were weeks out and I was under pressure from my 7yo to get it up.
