Under construction in Phoenix - it’s hot!

We have 12 inch limestone coping and will have grass coming up to the coping. Does anyone have a similar design and can tell me what to do with the area where the skimmer and water leveler are outside the coping? This is somewhat of an owner build. I have a great general but I’ve done the design , didn’t think about this though. Thanks in advance

Is it artificial grass, I hope?
How about make a rock area that covers that.

I can't imagine having real grass growing in Phoenix.

Yep, real grass. Artificial gets too hot. Here is a before picture. Thinking a small rock area there with a limestone border somehow. Does that make sense?

I would keep the grass as far away from the edge of the pool as possible. You have to fertilize the grass, fertilizer has iron in it, with granular fertilizer, it will get in the pool and stain it. I hope you will be maintaining and cutting the grass, as a service will make a mess of it.

115 degrees this week. Can’t wait until we are in the water! Tile is on Wednesday!

Having grass that close to a pool is almost as bad as putting sand by the ocean. (I've tried to convince the Big Guy he should replace all that, but so far he hasn't responded!) My now-removed lawn was a good 5' away from my pool, separated by deck and coping, but my pool would get trashed with grass every Tuesday (mowing day). There are lots of reasons why almost every pool you've ever seen in a magazine or website, or used yourself, is surrounded by 3' or more of some sort of hard surface: concrete or pavers or decking, etc. Landscaping and grass right next to a pool looks good on paper, not so good in reality. With a decent amount of pool traffic, I'd be surprised if grass would do well. Pool water is saltwater.

To your question, I wouldn't want gravel so close to either my skimmer or my auto-filler, because gravel will wind up in both. Smaller chunks could make it through the baskets and into your impeller and filter. Gravel in the leveler, if it's anything like mine, would end up in the equalizer tube and would be tough to remove.

If I can't talk you into surrounding your pool with concrete, at least surround your skimmer and leveler with it. You could use colored and/or textured concrete, or aggregate, to soften its appearance.

Thx! Good point on the gravel. We can always add deck/more limestone later but for now my family wants the super clean minimal deck look. Maybe after they’ve cleaned out the grass enough times.

I like the shape of your shelf. :giggle: What are the dimensions of your pool and shelf? What kind of equipment do you plan on using?
Thank you! The pool itself is 12 x 26. The shelf is 14 ft in the front and 20 ft in the back and 6ft wide. There are 2 returns on the shelf.
equipment is a VS intellaflo pump , 1 TR 100 sand filter, pentair heater, a blower of some sort and automation but I added after so don’t have specs.

Of course. But be sure your PB and his electrician are aware of this possibility. A pool and its surroundings need to be electrically bonded together. Have them leave a way to bond a future deck to the existing bond system. I'm sure that'll be an easy thing to do, but if they are aware of your idea, they can make it as simple as possible.
