When replacing a light fixture that is in a wet niche, is the new fixture required to be UL Listed? I'm considering a fixture from sunseeker, but it is not UL. I would really like to go with the SS fixture, but don't want to do something wrong.

Reasons to use UL Listed products:
  1. Experience the benefits of Third Party Certification
The UL listing is called a “Third Party Certification”. This certification provides an unbiased safety assurance to interested parties including the manufacturer, the specifier, and the consumer. UL’s field reps worldwide conduct periodic, unannounced on site inspections of UL-certified products in the manufacturer’s factory. The product is verified as being fully compliant with a set of rules governing the product. Another part of the agreement is traceable labels. Each product listed must have a label affixed to the product traceable to the manufacturer through Underwriters Laboratories.
  2. Gain an advantage with Listed and Classified Products
They are not the same, in fact Classified products have been evaluated only for specific properties, a limited range of hazards, or suitability for use under limited conditions. If a product is Classified by UL, this can mean its testing meets the particular requirements for a single test with a published result, but has nothing to do with all the other tests that may form part of a Standard (i.e., UL 181).
  3. Stand out with full UL Listing and Compliance
If products comply to some parts of specific UL Standard, this can mean their testing only meets that part of the Standard, but the products do not fully conform with the UL requirements. Be sure the company you go with is in full compliance, because if only partial, it is not a true UL listed product.
  4. You can always search through UL’s directory
The Online Certifications Directory includes the names of companies authorized to use the UL Mark on or in connection with products in compliance with UL’s requirements. If you wish to view that a product is UL Listed, then either use the web address ul.com and the Online Certifications Directory tab searching for a company name e.g. Kingspan or UL file number, alternatively type in the link below or search company name e.g. ‘Kingspan’.QUote UL

CSA Group is recognized and accredited in the U.S. by ANSI and by OSHA which lists us as a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

This enables us to test your products against the U.S. standards written or administered by organizations including the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), CSA Group (CSA), NSF International (NSF) and other organizations.

UL 676 is the Standard for Underwater Luminaires and Submersible Junction Boxes.

The standard’s requirements cover underwater luminaire installation for swimming pools and similar structures, operating on supply circuits rated 150 volts or less in accordance with National Electric Code, NFPA 70.

____________________________________________________________________

UL 1081 is the Standard for Swimming Pool Pumps, Filters, and Chlorinators.

The standard’s requirements apply to motor-operated nonsubmersible water pumps, pump-filter combinations and chlorinators for use with pools, hot tubs and spas in accordance with National Electric Code, NFPA 70.

The pump is secured directly to the motor or the pump and motor are factory secured to a common frame.

They may be permanently connected or cord- and plug-connected to the electrical supply.

Products listed to the UL 676 and UL 1081 performance standards can be found on the UL Product Specification website: http://productspec.ul.com/index.php

Because the owners don't do any research or the people selling them are a fly by night company. There is never a problem until there is an accident and an investigation happens. By then the pool owner forgot where they got them or the people selling them have changed company names. It's at that point that your insurance starts questioning coverage for failign to follow reasonable codes.

Yes, I emailed them and they said it is not UL listed. Its strange because the photo is of a pentair. I guess must be a knockoff. Here is the link.

They cannot legally sell them unless they are certified for use in a pool or spa.

Maybe ask someone else who works there.

The lights look like Original Pentair lights, so maybe they are certified under the Pentair certification?

Regardless of the picture, the description states it is a Pooltone (registered mark) product.

From this post they do claim to be certified to UL 676.

The product has to be certified by an OSHA approved Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

The product is not listed as certified by an approved NRTL.

Current List of NRTLs.

From this post they do claim to be certified to UL 676.

CE marking indicates that a product has been assessed by the manufacturer and deemed to meet EU safety, health and environmental protection requirements.

It is required for products manufactured anywhere in the world that are then marketed in the EU.

On commercial products, the letters CE (as the logo CЄ) mean that the manufacturer or importer affirms the good's conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

It is not a quality indicator or a certification mark.

The CE marking is required for goods sold in the European Economic Area (EEA), but is also found on products sold elsewhere that have been manufactured to EEA standards.

The FCC logo or the FCC mark is a voluntary mark employed on electronic products manufactured or sold in the United States which indicates that the electromagnetic radiation from the device is below the limits specified by the Federal Communications Commission and the manufacturer has followed the requirements of the Supplier's Declaration of Conformity authorization procedures.
