Two sand filter pumps on one AGP

I have an intex 20x52 pool and I just installed a Hayward skimmer. I have two sand filter pumps, one on the skimmer and the other is an extra. I want to use the second pump for filtration. What's the best way to add the second pump? Cut another hole for a return line or tie into the current return line?

First of all, you can't have a username like that without showing us the goods. Vroooommm! :) As for the pump(s), we would first like to ask you why you feel the need to incorporate a 2nd pump/filter. Poor circulation, additional accessories, algae, etc? If your first pump and filter are of adequate capacity and water chemistry correct, a second set-up really shouldn't be required. But tell us more about each of these pumps and filters (make/model, HP, etc) first so we know for sure. Post some pics if you like. It certainly can be done, we just want to confirm your reasons to ensure it doesn't cause more problems later. Welcome to TFP!

In that case, IMO I would probably operate on the opposite end of the pool so that you have skimmer surface and filtration ability from each end. Good circulation and filtering whichever end of the pool the wind is blowing. If later down the road you elect to upgrade from two moderate sized Intex pumps to a larger aftermarket pump that can support everything, then you can tie those lines together into once suction line.

+4 for Pat above.

1) Welcome to TFP !!!
2) pics or the 454 didn't happen.
3) it will do zero for your chemistry.
4) intex equipment is often WAY undersized. If you have a second set and don't mind the re-engineering, it will cut your cleaning intervals in half. (But be twice as much when it's time).

And how I don't mind re-engineering
Clearly 👇

It's a restoration project still in the works
👍:)

You'll fit in here GREAT between the fellow pool enthusiests and tinkerers.
What's the best way to cut a hole or should I try to tie into the existing return line?
I'll punt this one to @Mdragger88 @jseyfert3 or @Casey as they know way more than me having imstalled skimmers before. Pat is already here if he has thoughts. (y)

The only other hole I've cut is for my skimmer. You could use the two factory inlets for the second pump if one pump is connected to a skimmer. I've also wanted to add a second skimmer in my pool for extra capacity (I am under some trees and get a lot of leaves). Perhaps the easiest thing to do for a second pump is just install a second skimmer?
