Trying to Decide UV or SWG?

I'm reading everything I can find to educate myself on the automated systems from Pentair and Jandy. My pool experience is old. I built my last pool in 2000 and everything has changed so much since then. I'll be back with questions!

With Pentair you got @Jimrahbe in your corner. You need that!
I own a 20' x 40' SWG pool with a UV sterilizer and it works well for me. I really don't use any more salt in my pool to maintain moderate to low chlorine levels than when I didn't have the UV. I generally don't have to add many chemicals after a opening either.

You can't, you just assume it is working..You can test chlorine, but not UV.. Kind of the whole point of TFP...

A swcg needs a specific amount of salt to operate whether you have uv or not.
It either produces chlorine or it doesn’t.
The two things are unrelated (amount of salt & presence of uv)
The cell does not consume salt it simply uses a piece of it to make chlorine for a brief moment in time.
Salt is only removed from the pool via exchanging water (draining & refilling)

Jim Then you basically judge a difference in management between seasons, i.e. did you have more algae, did is clear up faster, did you need more chemicals. Yeah it's a judgement call. You could look at your pool water under a microscope.. Seen plenty of organisms in dirty water.

It was a trick question.
Algae and spending more on chemicals is what brings us the most new members. Then we teach them how to do it on the cheap and easy so there's never any more algae. (If they listen).
