Trying to Cope

I am ready to cope my pool and pour the concrete deck. I would like to do rock, but have questions about the joint between the rock coping and the slab concrete deck. From what I have read, there needs to be an expansion joint of around 3/4". What is that made of and please post pics if you have them.

I think caulk gets too rigid over time.

High quality mastic like Deck-O-Seal lasts a lot longer than 3 years.
