Trying hard but still lost!

Hi Everyone! So I tried to research as much as possible before coming here for help but I am feeling more overwhelmed than ever. This will probably be long, thank you if you make it to the end:)

Within 3 months I have gone from having a pool service, to relying on the pool store to buying my own Taylor test kit. Here are the issues I'm struggling with; I went out of town a few weeks ago for 4 days and while I was gone no one attended to the pool (vacuumed, skimmed, tested etc). I came back to algae growth. Went to the pool store followed their instructions to shock it (5 of those little bags) and for the most part it cleared up with the exception of some stuck in the pebbles. I got mixed advice from the pool store based on whoever was working there that day. I used a wire brush to scrub the spots where algae remained but otherwise just vacuumed, brushed the surface etc. The next week my pool store water results were fine. The following week there was still algae in the pebbles (I'm scared a patch it is black algae!) and pool store test results showed lower CYA and low total alkalinity. One more confounding factor is that the flow over feature from the hot tub/spa to the pool was temporarily off and green algae really started to grow in there. Maybe a dumb move but I turned the flow feature back on so I'm sure some algae is getting from the hot tub to the main pool. At this point I was not getting clear advice from the pool store so I researched here, read the Pool School articles and bought the Taylor Kit.

I did my first Taylor kit test yesterday and no surprise here were my results:

FC 2.6
TA 80
CYA 35
pH 7.5
CH 400

Pool math said to add 8.6 pounds of stablizier and soda ash. I started yesterday afternoon with the powder stabilizer (via the method of dissolving it in a bucket and putting in skimmer) but it was a lot so so far I have only added half. I was going to wait at least 48 hours to re-test the CYA. *I wasn't able to add the 24 hour SWG output in the Pool Math calculator because I can't figure out the make of my SWG or what the output is*

This morning I tested the FC and the it was down to 1.8 so that freaked me out and I came straight here to type this before finishing the other tests. I assume the free chlorine is low because of the algae and the low CYA?

I guess my questions are:
- when should I add the soda ash when all the stabilizer has been added?
- how should I proceed to try to treat for this algae that's sticking around (again, it's mostly in between the pebbles)

If you made it this far and followed at all - thank you!!! I am making it my mission to learn how to do this but am not feeling very confident at the moment.

Welcome to TFP!!! :paddle:

Stop. Take a breath. Your numbers are fine. Except FC and algae. Do not add more stabilizer! Do not add soda ash.

Print this out (see link at the end of the sentence). Read it three times. Keep it in your back pocket and follow it to rid yourself of algae. Link-->SLAM Process

Ok so I read the SLAM protocol while adding 5 gallons of 10% liquid chlorine (per pool math my SLAM level is 16). I have brushed the surface and in a few hours I will re-test for FC and vacuum. When so I start trying the OCLT test - assuming I can figure out how to turn my chlorinator to 0?

I'm not sure your question. I would not do OCLT until you pool is much more clear, saves reagent. Your Chlorinator should be off, or set to zero.

If you had visible algae, not worth doing. If you want the practice, and don't mind the hours (must be after sunset and before sunrise), go for it. I would use the reagents for FC testing and replacement, at least while there is any visible algae. Do you have enough reagents? During SLAM you can use 5ml sample and each drop is 1FC for hourly testing. Use 10ml sample for OCLT (each drop is .5FC).

Thank you. I have a brand new Taylor K-2006 kit so for now I'm good on reagents but I think I will heed your advice and wait. I really appreciate the help!

Progress?
Brushed, vacuumed and then tested at 6pm and FC was at 20 (my SLAM target was 16 😬). I am running the filter all night. The pool water looks REALLY good but I have one stubborn spot under the waterfall that I am becoming more convinced is black algae. I will do all tests in the am and then keep up my levels. I figured i’d get in there tomorrow with the wire brush and attack the trouble spot. The problem is that it’s over my head and staying down long enough to brush is hard. Is it too early to try the light pressure washer treatment? Also at what point should we shut off the filter to clean the cartridges?

Again- so many thanks!

Never too early to try pressure washing...need to break the biofilm over the algae. Start low and build, won't take much. The protocol for cleaning filter is...clean your filters. Note clean pressure. When pressure rises 25%, clean cartridges again.

Happy to help. 1000s of pool owners we have helped. Glad you joined the bunch...

Pressure washer…is this plaster pool or fiberglass?

Well a happy update. As of this afternoon my pool looks incredible! The patches of algae I was worried about last night and this morning were almost completely gone this afternoon. I got in a scrubbed what was left that I could see and vacuumed. As of now FC is at 16.8 which is my SLAM level and my CC is .4. So I’m thinking either do the OCLT tonight or tomorrow.

When do I address Ph, CYA (my level is 40) etc again is it when my FC drifts back down lower?

Awesome, but if you still can visibly see a spot of algae I that would not pass the clarity test. I would give it at least another day at SLAM levels before you do an OCLT.

I've seen far too many people end their SLAM a day or two early and then get really frustrated when the algae comes back and they have to restart their SLAM.

Ok, good advice. I will be patient. I’m working from home and have the chlorine so no sense rushing it. I’m just feeling so much more confident that I can do this pool thing thanks to y’all!

A little update. Finally turned off my chlorinator last night so numbers this morning are purely the driven by doing the SLAM. Here they are:

FC: 12.8
CC: 0.2
pH: 7.8
TA: 90
CH: 430
CYA: 40
-crystal clear water
-a small amount of visible algae but decreasing daily.

I added a gallon of LC which according to Pool Math should bring me back up a FC of 16 which is my SLAM level. So my plan is to continue SLAMing for another day or two before I do the OCLT. Does that sound appropriate?
