Treating green pool

Hi,

I have a green pool because of copper and would like to know ways to get rid of it from the water. I found CUL-1MO Culator/Metal Eliminator and Stain Preventer but it is quite expensive and I am wondering whether I should just replace the water instead of filtering the metals from the existing water.

Context:
About a week ago, my pool was overtaken by algae because of slightly FC and no filtration during the daytime (I was trying to save on electricity during the high peak times). Because of this, in a day or two, the pool filled with algae. Tried to brush and vacuum the pool with little improvement. Later that night, I added algaecide and chlorine to kill the algae. The next day, I could not see much algae but the water was still cloudy and it had a visible green tint.

Running the pump for the whole 24 hours did not help, so, decided to put more algaecide followed by chlorine. After realizing that this is not working, I searched for the issue and learned that the issue may not have been caused by algae but copper-based algaecide. Pretty ironic, I must say.

So, right now, my pool is pretty green and it has enough FC so it is not because of algae.

The only way to remove copper is to drain the pool. Is this an above ground pool? Draining a pool with a vinyl liner has risks.
Do not use algaecide. Most of it contains copper.

Hi Marty, yes, it is an above ground pool

You can safely drain down to half way and refill. If that reduces the copper enough then when you drain again for the winter it will reduce it a bit more.

If the copper has stained the liner, well, it is very difficult to remove those stains. So best to drain now before you have any stains (hopefully).
