TFP Intro - SoCal - New Build

Hi TFP Community. Family just embarked on our pool build. Shotcrete was completed last week.

5 years ago, never thought I’d own a pool. EVER.

Wife and son changed my mind and now we are looking forward to this pool-side lifestyle. We live in Southern California, inland dessert region, so the pool will be year-round thing for us.

Here’s a few pics of current construction. Trying to decide on the following. If anyone has input, feel free to add. Been searching the forum

Pool Type: Saltwater 16x32, with integrated 8x8 spa, max 6’ deep

Plaster: NPT Stonescape Mini - Will this be to rough? Haven’t been in a pool with one before and our pool builder, very reputable, recommended it as a sweet spot between aesthetic and longevity, but we’ve had multiple people reference mini pebble being too rough.

Plaster Color: We like Stonescape Black Mini. Dark green in deeper end, with lagoon vibe is appealing to us. Some concerns on it holding too much heat in summer (no chiller pump) but leaning towards not caring because it looks so good.

Decking: Brushed v. Salt Rock Concrete. My wife likes salt rock. I’m indifferent, but don’t want it to look bad. We don’t want to spend a ton and want something that will last, look clean, but not too industrial. A couple threads on issues with the cold and water freezing in the indents of salt rock finish, but not a concern in Southern California. Any recommendations for or against Salt Rock?

Umbrella Sleeves: Plan is to do 5 total. One is already installed on the Baja shelf. Other will be on deck placed where they should help with sun. Used an app to check sun angles through the year, so hopping we do best we can with placement. The design drawing attached details the locations - black dots. Any input on others choice/regrets/positives on where they installed their sleeves?

Gate: Pool builder quoted for wrought iron. We love hog wire/box wire for more of a rustic/country vibe. We need to meet city code, but wondering if anyone has had success with hog wire/box wire install?

Anyway, I’ll be scouring TFP for more info to catch up on the dos and don’ts. Thanks in advance!

I wish you posted this a few weeks ago. Many things are now literally set in stone. What specific equipment are you getting?

Umbrella Sleeves
I would recommend not installing umbrella sleeves in your deck. Get a few quality umbrella bases that can be moved around the deck to follow the sun and suit your needs.

This is what we opted to do, we originally wanted several holes around the deck, but our pool builder recommended against it because they would never be exactly where we wanted shade as the sun the moved.

I wouldn't think you'd have any issues using hog wire for the fill in your enclosure fencing, as long as it meets the maximum opening sizes.

We did a little different style here in AZ for a rustic vibe.

Thank you! Yea, same here. Only issue is I have been unable to source a hog wire fence that meets these specifications:
  • Wire squares must be no larger than 1.25 inches and minimum 11 gauge thickness
  • Fence Height: 60 inches minimum
My search continues!

Thanks. Hoping to have clean look. Kind of an educated guess on locations. If it turns out not working, definitely will be looking into portable-base models.

All Pentair
You need specific model #s. Things like "Variable Speed Pump" are too vague.

For the pump, IntelliFlo3 is the gold standard. I would highly recommend a large cartridge filter instead of DE. The CCP520 is a great choice. Get a bypass for your heater.

Are you getting automation, such as IntelliCenter?

Pool cleaner/robot?

What's the estimated volume of the pool? Get a SWCG that's at least twice the volume of the pool.

Check out something like this. You can choose the opening size, and wire thickness, you're going to need .120 minimum to meet the 11ga specs.

Thank you.

I need to check the equipment specs.

No cleaner/robot yet, but starting to look into various models. I’ll check TFP for recommendations.

Pool volume is 13,000 gallons.

We’re in SoCal as well near Palm Springs. We did black mini pebble and our pool color looks more like a lake or lagoon when looking from the house rather than tropical. The texture isn’t as smooth as plaster but it’s not rough. I had never been in a pebble pool before so it was definitely a different feel. We’ve had it almost a year now and no one has complained about the finish being too rough. I felt like it was no hotter or not much hotter than a lighter color pool this last summer. I recall the temp of the water being in the 80s which was nice.

Beautiful pool! Looks great. We went with black mini pebble with abalone. Your input helps ease my wife and I’s anticipation. Excited to see how it turns out. I’m located in Riverside, so not too far away and slightly cooler. Just barely.

Glad I could help. Materials and colors were not easy to choose!
