So at the beginning of summer, I purchased this stirrer. It worked great until about 3 weeks ago and then just stopped. I figure I just got a janky unit so I decided to order another one. Just received it today. I tried the batteries that it came with - no go. I then grabbed 4 batteries that I had that are brand new - again - no go. Anyone else have such trouble? From the posts on TFP, it seems like it is a really popular choice but not so sure after my first one broke within 3 months and the second one ordered does seem to work. Not sure if I should order a 3rd or if there is a different one people would recommend.

These guys sell both - I've had the Smart Stir for a couple of years, and it still has the initial batteries. Magnetic Stirring Devices

TFTESTKITS ran out of those for their kits, and subbed in Taylor for a while. Now they offer a choice. That may be why you've seen more references to Taylor lately.

Where did you buy the stirrer from?

Return it as defective.

Before you sending packing as defective...

I know that you have tried "new" batteries. But do me a solid. Get new batteries. Make sure they are alkaline batteries. Make sure the orientation is correct (- to the spring).

Here are a bunch of threads I posted to, with this recommendation, that brought the speedstir to life.

I have three speedstirs and a smartstir . The SpeedStirs are each almost 10 years old. Aside from occasionally changing batteries, they work fine. Odd that you got two defective units in a row but I can attest to the fact that they are simple and they work. As @ajw22 said, if you have the packaging a receipt, send them back to whomever you purchased them from.

My Speedstir is probably more than 5 years old. I'm not sure of its age but I've use it here for two years and several years at the old house. I never had a problem with it. When the pills starts to wiggle instead of freely spinning, that usually means the batteries are getting weak.
