Hello!
I have a Summer Waves 26x52 with an upgraded cartridge filter (krystal clear 2500gph). I usually clean the filter about every other day but the pump itself has a cracked tube and to replace it will cost just as much as a new pump. So I have been looking into switching over to a sand filter instead.
What size is needed? There are so many options and I don't know what requirements I need for my size pool.
Is it worth it to have sand vs cartridge?
I should note I do have a Hayward skimmer I added.
TIA!

When it comes to filtering bigger is better. The only real thing to watch out for is that you properly size the pump and filtration device to match their flow rates. I chose my setup for having the ability to exchange the water at a much faster rate (see signature). I used this same pump in a Intex 9x18.

As for which is "better" it really depends on understanding what you are trying to achieve as both have pros and cons. I would just Google it and read a few sites to get a feel for what is entailed with either.

I was running a few different sand filters over the years, as I tweak to find the best option (slightly used deals nearby) The sand filter was ok.... but with a salt pool, it was harder to find a place to backwash that didn't kill the lawn or garden area.

SOOOO I found a smoking deal and I do mean smoking $150 for this over sized cartridge filter (150 sq inch I believe)

Anyway, point being. it does TWICE the job of the sand filter without the risk of blowing sand back in the pool. Plus now when I need to clean the filter, I bought an extra to rotate out. I went 3/4 of a year without cleaning it. Needless to say, I will be an oversized cartridge user from now on.

I love a sand filter, so I would say just get the biggest one you can afford if that’s the way you wanna go. There’s no issue with Sand blow back into the pool unless you break a lateral so be very careful when filling it and I never experienced any lawn issues from backwashing. Keep in mind I’m in Florida and we have really sandy soil where I’m at so we’re pretty salty already. 😂
