Paul, I don't know your friends, but if presented with all these options and technical details--after having someone else take care of the pool--I think my head would be spinning. Is there an interim solution to the pool guy problem? Pool water chemistry is not that complicated. Can your friend learn and take care of the pool with chlorine, MA, and baking soda (and a bit of CYA) for a while? Once he knows what is going on, he can decide if he wants to invest money in a swcg or continue maintaining "manually." The only difference in liquid chlorine and swcg...is liquid chlorine vs swcg. All the other stuff still has to be done by someone. I mean, it isn't like the SWCG is taking the place of their pool guy! A few months of total owner maintenance--plus reading and maybe asking questions on this site--and your friend may be in the position to analyze and make the decision to continue pouring chlorine or buy a salt alternative. At least he'll know what he will be getting or not getting. Just a thought.
