Stubborn Yellow Algae

Thank you. I thought I read that some where so thanks for the confirmation. The pH has been running high and I've been adding acid like crazy. It was a year in May so I'm not sure if it's gotten much better!

Any suggestions on how much chlorine I should add until I get the results of my next CYA test after the pool is filled back up?
your pool is not that much different than mine, so I would say 1/2 to a bottle of 8.25% each day. WalMart GreatValu is what I use.

Thank you - that helps! How much do you find you need to add each day once everything is up and running well? Or is that what you add every day during the summer and then possibly something less during the winter?

I did a partial drain and refill last night/this morning and made sure to clean everything thoroughly with Clorox (light, skimmer, brushes, tile). I let the pump run for about an hour and then did another CYA test which still shows a level of 100 (not as bad as the day before) so I'm going to need to do another drain/refill cycle tonight. I hesitate to drain during the day because it is 100 and sunny so I'm draining until about 3 a.m. and then refilling to prevent any plaster issues. I also ordered new CYA testing solution but it looks like the soonest it will be delivered is the 11th so I'm just going to continue testing all other chemicals and getting as much water replaced until then. I'm also running the pump. The values I just got are: FC=5ppm, CC=0, pH=7.7, Ta=130ppm, CH=575ppm.

I'm in Las Vegas and we are known to have very hard water but it was 225ppm after our complete drain/refill last summer and went to 260ppm by the end of summer. I honestly haven't been checking CH on a regular basis.

Is there anything else I should be doing at this point? I feel stuck until I get the new solutions. Thanks!

No, you are doing the most important part, getting that CYA under control.

To answer your question I use less than half a bottle of 8.25 bleach a day in the summer. I actually noticed my chlorine usage going up and discovered my CYA was down to 40, so it's going in today.

I finally received my new CYA Testing solution and have drained and refilled the pool every night for the last 5 nights and finally have a CYA level that allows me to SLAM! I adjusted the pH to 7.2 by adding acid and by using the Pool Math. Calculator I determined I need to add 6.7 jugs (121 oz.) to get to a FC level of 29. The chart says 24 and pool math says 29 so I figured I'd go with the higher one. Before I added the chlorine my levels were:
FC 4, pH 7.2, TA 150, CH 350, CYA 50. I calculated that I acut ally added more than 30k gallons of fresh water over 5 days. It would have been more efficient to completely drain the pool since it is only 22k gallons but it is so hot right now I didn't want to risk any plaster damage. I am running the pump continuously and will check the FC level in a few hours to make sure I'm still at the SLAm level. I need to test late and night and first thing in the morning, correct?

Im so excited and hope to have this pool under MY control very soon!

The shock levels in PoolMath and Pool School chart should match, not sure why you see them different.

You're right. I was looking at the shock level of FC from the CYA chart since it was the last column I incorrectly assumed it was the mustard-algae shock level. Pool math says FC=29 so that's what I'm sticking with. Thanks!

Hi all, I could use a little more advice with this process. I started SLAMming on 6/11 and have been keeping track of how much bleach I've been adding and all FC levels and find that I have added 16 jugs (121 oz, 8.25%) so far. I have not seen any algae since I began the drain/refill process prior to the SLAM and the water looks great. Does it make sense that I'm still needing to add so much bleach? I've been running the pump 24/7. Is it normal for it to take a few days?

The CC is 0 and I haven't met the <1 on the OCLT yet. Thanks for the information- I wasn't sure how long it could take. My husband is laughing at me because of the amount of bleach I have gotten and jokingly said the store is going to report me to homeland security :).

When I tested last night I had a FC level of 22 so I added 2 jugs of bleach and retested 2 hours later and the FC level was 26. My target is 29. The new reading didn't seem right and I wanted to re-test but it didn't happen. Ran a test 5:30 this morning and am getting 27.5. It's still not 29 but before adding more bleach it occurred to me that I should ask the experts since the FC level is actually higher this morning than it was last night (assuming I didn't mis-count drops last night). Help.

Hello Chris. FC wouldn't go up overnight, so I would suspect you miss-counted at some point. It certainly happens. Just stay with it this morning with rested eyes and stay on that SLAM. Keep the FC level at your current CYA based on the Chlorine/CYA chart (link) below. Good luck!

Just checking back in for a couple of questions. My OCLT is getting a little better. it was 3ppm last night/this morning so hopefully I'm getting close. My question is this: Each time I check the FC level I obviously need to add Chlorine to get back to the recommended level of 29 but how low/long can it get before I am back to square one? I am not always able to test every two hours. Each time I do test I'm adding 2-3 jugs. It has been really hot (110 and not a cloud in the sky). It's supposed to get even hotter over the next week. Everything I've read says the sunlight and fungus is what eats up the chlorine. Does heat play a factor?

Not fungus, any organics in the water consume the FC along with the sun. High water temps make it easier for the algae to grow. Plus the sun is getting to be more intense as well.

You just have to keep the FC level up the best you can.

Thank you. I just didn't know if it got down to say 20 then the last few days have meant nothing. The good news is that there isn't a whole lot blowing around right now and it's been easy to keep it free from any debris. Just a little Palm tree fuzz.

I'm scooping a couple of times a day. The good news is the palms get trimmed tomorrow!

Just returned from my local Walmart to get more bleach and was actually stopped and questioned by the guard as I was leaving. He wanted to know why I was buying such a large quantity of bleach and when I told him he said, "okay, just making sure you weren't planning to off someone". Now that's a first!
