:eek::eek::eek:

So a very wise friend of mine sent me to this website ?

I recently bought a home with a pool and am learning along the way. The pool was opened last week 5 gallons of chlorine were added to the pool. And I was told leave the pump on and it should clear.

A week and several hundred dollars later here I am. I went to Leslie’s and had the water tested added some chemicals and had it retested today this was my numbers this am:
FC 2
TC 2
CH 50
CYA 20
TA 20
PH 7
Phosphates 1000

I was told to add 23 lbs of alkalinity up which I did .. wait 4 hrs and add the conditioner which I did they said come back tomorrow to retest and I may need just a clarifier

They also told me add 1/2 bottle of phos free which I held after reading here. My water is cloudy blue
I can see in the bottom of the shallow side but not the deep side

My question is.. what time frame should it clear up and what am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the forum!
You are not doing anything wrong - you are being pool stored.
You need to SLAM Process. To do that you need a proper test kit, I suggest the TF100 - Test Kits Compared
While you are waiting on delivery of your test kit, add 5ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine to the pool each evening. That will be about 2 jugs of 6% bleach (no scent, not splashless, no Cloromax) or about 1 gallon of 10% liquid chlorine from Walmart, Home Depot, etc.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

Yesterday I also took a water sample and they advised me to put in two scoops of shock ( I bought a bundle) would that be considered beginning the SLAM process? I then vacuumed the pool and too kthe sample today which is when I did the alkaline up etc.

Should I SLAM it again?

Read the links. What you are doing is dump and hope. You need a proper test kit.
You should not use powdered chlorine unless you know what it will do to your water chemistry. It has either CYA or Calcium in it. You most likely need neither of them.

Hey everyone

I received my test kit here are my number

Ph 7.3
Fc was just very pink so I’ll just say > 5
TA 100
Cya Was clear not cloudy at all

The pool is still not clear I can see the bottom in the shallow side but not the deep end

Any suggestions?

Using PoolMath, put in enough CYA to get to 30 ppm. Once you get that in the pool, start the SLAM process but be sure you understand it before you begin. From the pic, that will be a fairly easy pool to get clear.

Hey everyone!

So the pool is looking clearer! There is still some white algae floating around though. I tried the sock thing for the CYA but the sock fell in smh... and it’s too cloudy down that end to see and get it out IM assuming to just put it in the skimmer maybe ?

Here are my numbers for today
FC 10
TC 10
CYA 10
TA 90
PH 7.6

So should I continue to work on the CYA?

Thank you again for your advice!

Fish out the sock with the CYA, it will stain your vinyl liner.

Put it in the skimmer.

Good morning!

So progress... I saw very little algae this morning .. almost none. The pool is still dark in the deep middle end. The sides are much clearer.

Here are my numbers so far

PH 7.2
TA 90
CYA 60
FC& TC were just very pink... my kit only goes to 5 so I can’t give an exact number.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you!

You need to purchase a better test kit as was suggested earlier. The color block kits are not all that accurate and don't read high enough to properly measure your FC levels. They are well worth the money and will save you time and money down the road.

Your numbers dont make sense. Your pH should never be under 7 and you have it listed as 4.2!

Great -- but explain the "FC& TC were just very pink... my kit only goes to 5 so I can’t give an exact number. "

What test kit are you using?

We can help, but realize, without proper testing you will spend far more in chemicals than necessary.

In Post 2 I listed the proper tests kits for you to select from.
