Strange holes in pool cleaner hose

I've had an operational pool for approximately (7) years now and all of a sudden holes are appearing in my pool cleaner hose (see attachments). The hose sections affected are closest to the skimmer basket and if I replace a section, within a couple of days new holes appear. The holes go from outside to in (I can feel bumps on the inside of the hose). The holes are not symmetric and sometimes there's only one hole by itself. A friend in the pool cleaning business thought it might be an animal. Has anyone ever seen this? If it's an animal, what kind (rat, racoon, etc.)? Any ideas on how to stop this?

Looks like puncture holes. No idea what's causing it. Maybe set up a surveillance camera.

Racoons caused the same damage to my hose. Cute & cleaver critters while in a zoo, nasty and destructive in your backyard. Good luck.

This was my thought also. Maybe not a teen, but a youngin'.
