Strange Buildup in my Hayward Chlorinator

I live on Long Island. Won't be able to close my pool for another 2 weeks or so. Have to keep the pool up and running. Today, I went out to test the chemistry, etc. I opened my Hayward chlorinator to check the amount of 3" tabs left in it and saw that there was this grayish white crud all over the inside walls. Came off very easily but I never saw this before. Since I am going to be disconnecting the chlorinator and cleaning it in 2 weeks I didn't want to dislodge the crud and have it fall to the bottom so I just left it. So I took out 4 tabs and put it in the chlorinator and they some went below the water line and they started to bubble. I never saw this before either. All the pool chemistry was good. Any ideas what this crud is and why the tabs started to bubble? Pictures attached. Thanks, Dave

If the chlorine tabs sit too long in the feeder with inadequate flow, the chlorine gets too concentrated in the feeder and begins to attack the plastic. That's probably part of the gunk.

If the feeder valve is kept closed or set too low or the pump is off, the chlorine will get too concentrated and cause problems.

If the pump is left off too long with tabs in the feeder, chlorine can migrate through the system and damage anything that it touches.

If you're getting a big cloud of chlorine gas when you open the feeder, the chlorine is getting too concentrated.

The tablets have a binder compound that helps the tablet form a solid tablet instead of a crumbly tab that falls apart. The binder residue can build up and coat the feeder.
