Starting up UF Intex 32x16 salt,sand etc

Finally got it up, All I have is the test strips it came with today. Using the pump/filter it came with and the Intex krystal clear salt water system.

Went to Menards and got 350lbs of blue diamond salt (blue bag) and 150lb of pool filter sand silica 20. Theres already water in the tank since I forgot to close the valves will this matter when I add sand?

Just dump the salt in the pool and sand in the pump? What else/how much else needs to be added for start up?

Hello and welcome to TFP!

You need to get a proper test kit, we recomend TFT-100 or Taylor K-2006C. Start reading pool school at the top, this will help you understand the way to manage your pool and the terms we use. First thing is to get some sand on the filter, do not drop sand on the PUMP basket. You can drain the water from the sand filter, there is a cap on the bottom to drain the water. After draining the water fill the sand filter making sure the laterals are correctly in place and are not broken. Make sure you do not drop sand on the center tube, most filters come with a special cap to fill. Then assemble the filter, put in backwash, and turn on the pump until clear water comes out the waste port. This will clean the sand. Then turn off the pump and switch the sand filter to filter and turn pump back on. Now you can start adding salt to the pool. Use Pool Math above to calculate how much to add, while you are there also calculate how much CYA you need to get it up to 70ppm, put it in a sock and hang in front of a return squeezing regularly to help dissolve. Now to the most important part, you need to add Chlorine to your pool, we call this regular bleach. As the same with other chemicals, go to poolmath and calculate how much bleach you need to raise FC from 0 to at least 8-10ppm. After that you can only guess as to how much FC your pool needs since you will not have the test kit(order quickly), so pour about 1 qt of bleach daily until you can test properly. Dont pay too much attention to the guesstrips.

The HTH brand that WalMart carries calls it Stabilizer. Check the ingredients, same stuff.

BTW- It's best to have the filter about 1/2 full of water when you add the sand as it cushions the impact of the sand against the laterals.

Yeah, filling the sand filter went well...... I'm going to put the quart of bleach in should I do the 3.5lbs of cya the container calls for or wait for the test kit?

3.5lbs of CYA in your pool will raise CYA about 27ppm, & lower pH by about 0.5

Do you have a way to check the pH to make sure you did not go below 7.0 after the CYA addition?

CYA and bleach wasnt added yet..... Should I add both or should I be using the quart of bleach a day for maintenance until I get the proper test kit?

Anyone know why you have to wait 24 hours after adding salt to hook up the salt water system?

You are in no hurry to start the SWG, you need to get your numbers in line first. Remember the SWG is just to keep with the loss of FC, not to raise levels from 0. Salt usually dissolves quite quickly, but to be sure use your sweeper to spread it around and mix it.
