Sta-Rite 400 Service Heater Light

Hi there,

My Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm 400 "service heater" lamp just came on. I have gone through the following trouble shooting steps:
  • Cleaned pool filter catridges
  • Flipped off the circuit breaker switches for up to 1-minute
  • Inspected the inside electrical area to see if any debris is inside the casing
So far nothing has been able to fix the issue. The heater turns on for a few minutes and blows air through the vent. Then the light comes on and the air stops blowing through the vent.

Does anyone have suggestions on what to try?

Ha! This guy is very upset. So I should take the casing off again, and check the top board for a green light to identity which error message it is? Just clarifying as I'm not entirely sure. Also, presume this is safe to do while the power is on. I turned off the power before and had the machine in service mode. Thanks for your help!
 
You need to see which LED is coming on.

Only do what you feel safe doing.

The following are the LEDs:

1.....PS (Pressure Switch)
2.....HLS (High Limit Switch)
3.....SFS (Stack Flue Sensor)
4.....AFS (Air Flow Switch)
5.....AGS (Automatic Gas Shutoff).
6.....Service System
7.....Thermistor
8.....Heating
9.....Pool On
10...Spa On
11...Service Heater.

LED 10 and LED 11 turn on. What is the trouble shooting? I do not see this mentioned in that post.

Here's the picture of the lights which are on. When I turn the heater on, LEDS 10 and 8 turn on. After a few mins, LED 8 switches off, and LED 11 switches on. Nothing else is illuminated.

Check the Fenwal for the LED indicator.

The LED will flash on for 1/4 second, then off for 1/4 second during a fault condition. The pause between fault codes is 3 seconds. The LED light on the Fenwal box can indicate the following problems:
  • Steady on - Internal Control Failure
  • One flash - Air Flow fault
  • Two flashes indicates flame no call for heat, then the Fenwal is detecting a flame current when it shouldn't be
  • Three flashes indicates no flame current being sensed and ignition locked out

If it's saying Service Heater, then there is a reason.

Maybe your missing an LED lighting up?

Can you verify where each Led is and if it's coming on?

What does the display show?

How about LED 7?

Cranked it up again and got the Fenwall indicator to blink 3 times. Then it repeats 3 times again. I am running the machine on Pool heater, instead of Spa heater.

Do I turn the temp settings to lowest possible, then turn off the gas, wait 5 mins, turn on gas, cover jackets, and turn machine one?

You can check the gas pressure and the flame current.

I do not have this device.

Do I turn the temp settings to lowest possible, then turn off the gas, wait 5 mins, turn on gas, cover jackets, and turn machine one?
 
Does it sound like the heater actually lights or tries to light?

When it tries to light, you should hear a click like in the video.

If it actually lights, you should hear the sound and feel some heat briefly.

Did you check all gas valves?

Do you have a picture of the entire system?

How old is the heater?
