Spa spillover to pool - real or faux and why?

What is everyone's take on a spa spillover - should it really spillover or just be a faux spillover? Our new spa/pool is a faux spillover and much of the pluming doesn't work. The repair companies that have been out are recommending converting it to a real spillover to keep the water moving and fresh. We plan to keep our pool open year-round but will only be using the spa in the colder months. What are other pros/cons? Our pool is saltwater but our spa is not. Much of our filter and pumps likely need swapped up/out anyway. What are other pros/cons we are not aware of?

WF,

I have never heard of a fake spa spillover. Something just does not sound right to me... Do you have two sets of equipment? Two filters, two different pumps, etc..

How about posting some pics of your equipment pad, and the fake spillover...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Yes two filters and two pumps right now (and one for in floor cleaner). The faux spillover doesn’t work which is what’s promoting all the questions. It should run when we turn the sheer descents on (3 on pool and one on spa). The water just dribbles out so it’s shut off right now. Apparently the pumps aren’t strong enough to get the water to the 4th sheer descent/faux spillover.

WF,

Thanks for the pic..

I recommend a real spillover, but not a constant running spillover..

Basically here is how it works, using a single pump, filter, and heater.

In the Pool mode, water is sucked from the Pool by the pump and then pushed through the filter, heater, and back to the Pool..
In the Spa mode, water is sucked from the Spa by the pump and then pushed through the filter, heater and back to the Spa..
In the Spillover mode, water is sucked from the Pool by the pump and then pushed through the filter, heater, and back to the Spa.. Obviously, more water going into the Spa than coming out makes the Spa spillover into the Pool..

The advantage of your current system is that you can use the Spa in the winter with all the pool plumbing shut down. If you normally do not close for the winter then that is not much of an advantage.

One downside to a constantly running spillover is a constantly increasing pH... We normally suggest that you use your automation to schedule the spillover to run for 30 minutes twice a day. This keeps the spa water fresh and it would be saltwater... You could still push a button and turn on the Spillover any time you wanted to show off..

Thanks,

Jim R.
